If it were me, the Skoda would have lower insurance and I'd be driving a manual, because I want the performance to actually enjoy driving the car.

The Octavia - not just because I'm on my second, but because you have a second child on the way and the Octavia is bigger and roomier than the Leon. I'd go for a manual as I think from your last thread that you're buying secondhand, and the longevity of DSGs isn't yet proven.

I too would buy the Octavia, but maybe I am biased ;)

The Petrol Vrs I have is virtually a perfect 'all round' vehicle, fast, roomy, reliable. My Tsi is 2 years old now and I have had no faults with it at all, my last 5 cars were diesel and with this car I realised what I have been missing with petrol turbo urge !

The Leon I also looked at however I simply could not live with that dashboard and interior, the dash looks as if it is made out of a solid slab of fisher price plastic !

Looks like the Octavia is the all round favourite on HJ. What is it like economy wise?

Ok so I'm slowly getting convinced to go for the Octavia. My only issue is mpg?? So my mind is saying "dude it's gonna kill you on juice".

So do I go for petrol or diesel?

Found a few nice petrol ones.

My only issue is mpg??

Then the petrol VRS isn't for you. Try a mk 1 Fabia diesel. Residuals are rather high though.

The mpg question is subjective, "what are your roads and mileage"

I am A Road with virtually no motorway, I 'average' 32mpg normally, however I do 4 long journeys a year to Scotland and get 41mpg on the motorway. That is truly honest, my last 5 cars have been diesel and I don't believe they have been that much better for me.

It's up to your ,mileage though, and you don't say what your budget is as there is some things to look out for in the 2 cars, especially as the Octavia has the facelift with significant changes (mk6 Gti) !

My budget is £5-£7k and yes I noticed a big difference between the Octavia vrs and the facelift model.

Found this one. What you guys think?

Roads are mostly local driving. Maybe 4 to 5 long motorway journeys.

7.000 miles a year.

Need that speed to give me that buzz sometimes.

Something viable for me, wife and 2 kids.

Reliability.

Budget ideally £5/6k but push come to shove maybe £7k.

Stick with petrol for your low annual mileage. as almost everyone advised on your other thread. I would vote Octavia over Leon too, the Seat's plastic interior is terrible.

Short journeys and using the oomph will see you getting low to mid 20's MPG.

Overall, driven sensibly but enjoying the power occasionally I reckon you may get 32 like 2.0Tsi says, more on a long run.

The thing is, if you want to commute using the power every day, no car is going to return good mileage figures, no matter what the EU figures say.

Not surprisingly I get similar mpg to 2.0TSI as we have the same model.

The equipment is the same for petrol and diesel vRSs: there were some changes at the 2009 facelift, but I think your second advert just omits some of the equipment. You don't say what year your petrol vRS in the first advert is, or the mileage on the second, so hard to compare - generally a diesel will cost a bit more than a petrol of the same vintage. As already said, a petrol will suit your lowish mileage better. Also the hatch (probably roomy enough for you) will be cheaper than an estate.

My first vRS was a diesel, but like 2.0TSI I think I've gained rather than lost by switiching to petrol. The 2.0 GTI engine has plenty of low-down torque and is smoother and quieter than the common-rail diesel and a great deal quieter than the PD engine that you would probably get within budget. The PD engine also has had some reliability issues - I've now forgotten what the main problem was but it was expensive!

Seat leon FR (200) or Skoda Octavia VRs - abs982
The 1st advert is 2006 (56 reg) with 33k miles on the clock.

The 2nd advert is a mid 60k miles.

Is there a major difference between 2.0t vrs model and your tsi model? If so what's the difference.

I'm getting convinced to go for Octavia vrs due to size, comfort and reliability and of course performance.
Seat leon FR (200) or Skoda Octavia VRs - abs982
My only concern with the 1st advert I posted to you is that the vrs had 3 owners now considering it has only 36k mileage that Rings Alarm bells for me.

On the other thread you seemed to have made up your mind for something smaller - Leon sized. I suggested the Saab because it is slightly larger with a big boot - especially as you have a second on the way. So I'd say Octavia vRS, which is similar size (it's what I'll have next I expect), but then you say you're worried about mpg!!! I don't see how you can consider an FR/Aero/vRS type machine if you're worried about mpg?? Either you want the get-up-and-go and you're prepared to pay for it, or you don't.

Seat leon FR (200) or Skoda Octavia VRs - unthrottled

Either you want the get-up-and-go and you're prepared to pay for it, or you don't.

When niggling doubts remain about fuel economy given an estimated annual mileage of 7000 miles, it's time to take a reality check. I don't think that is going to happen in this case!

Seat leon FR (200) or Skoda Octavia VRs - abs982

I was so close to go and view some Octavia VRS's until i checked the insurance quote which was ridiculously expensive. I checked insurance quotes on Seat Leon Fr and they seem to be reasonable.

So gutted (i was actually looking forward to buy one).

So im back to square one...

what do i buy?? needs to be family sized car.

So ive come up with 2 options: Volvo S40 2.4 D5 (180bhp) or a BMW 320d (162bhp)...

Any advice?

Seat leon FR (200) or Skoda Octavia VRs - oldtoffee

BMW 2 litre diesels blow their turbos as they approach 100k. My local BMW indie warned me of this and said 330d if it has to be a diesel or much better a 325i petrol for reliability and a good performance and economy compromise.

I've driven a V70 with that D5 engine, went quite well but a bit thrummy and they are thirsty and bigger on VED than competitors. Nice cars Volvos, comfy and well dersigned interiors.

With your budget and mileage I'd be checking out petrol engined Accords, Mazda 6s and Avensis (? plural of Avensis?)
