The Octavia - not just because I'm on my second, but because you have a second child on the way and the Octavia is bigger and roomier than the Leon. I'd go for a manual as I think from your last thread that you're buying secondhand, and the longevity of DSGs isn't yet proven.

I too would buy the Octavia, but maybe I am biased ;)
The Petrol Vrs I have is virtually a perfect 'all round' vehicle, fast, roomy, reliable. My Tsi is 2 years old now and I have had no faults with it at all, my last 5 cars were diesel and with this car I realised what I have been missing with petrol turbo urge !
The Leon I also looked at however I simply could not live with that dashboard and interior, the dash looks as if it is made out of a solid slab of fisher price plastic !

Looks like the Octavia is the all round favourite on HJ. What is it like economy wise?

Ok so I'm slowly getting convinced to go for the Octavia. My only issue is mpg?? So my mind is saying "dude it's gonna kill you on juice".
So do I go for petrol or diesel?
Found a few nice petrol ones.

My only issue is mpg??
Then the petrol VRS isn't for you. Try a mk 1 Fabia diesel. Residuals are rather high though.

The mpg question is subjective, "what are your roads and mileage"
I am A Road with virtually no motorway, I 'average' 32mpg normally, however I do 4 long journeys a year to Scotland and get 41mpg on the motorway. That is truly honest, my last 5 cars have been diesel and I don't believe they have been that much better for me.
It's up to your ,mileage though, and you don't say what your budget is as there is some things to look out for in the 2 cars, especially as the Octavia has the facelift with significant changes (mk6 Gti) !

My budget is £5-£7k and yes I noticed a big difference between the Octavia vrs and the facelift model.

Roads are mostly local driving. Maybe 4 to 5 long motorway journeys.
7.000 miles a year.
Need that speed to give me that buzz sometimes.
Something viable for me, wife and 2 kids.
Reliability.

Budget ideally £5/6k but push come to shove maybe £7k.

Stick with petrol for your low annual mileage. as almost everyone advised on your other thread. I would vote Octavia over Leon too, the Seat's plastic interior is terrible.
Short journeys and using the oomph will see you getting low to mid 20's MPG.
Overall, driven sensibly but enjoying the power occasionally I reckon you may get 32 like 2.0Tsi says, more on a long run.
The thing is, if you want to commute using the power every day, no car is going to return good mileage figures, no matter what the EU figures say.
