Looking at buying a used car on a budget of £2000.
I travel around 250 miles a week split into two journeys. wondering what people would recommend. I would like something reliable and economical on the fuel. Also got to consider insurance groups. Do I go for larger or small car diesel or petrol. My thoughts where Diesel hopefully around 10 years old but wondering about mileage.

Best bet would be an old Jap petrol, IMO

A Siamese would be nice.

A Siamese would be nice.

Far too expensive on a budget, get a Moggy for nothing from a cat shelter.

If the op actually wanted a cheap car I'd recommend a Toyota Yaris or Diahatsu Sirion.

A Moggy IS a car.

Very tempted to suggest a Jaguar...

But seriously, I'd most probably be looking at a 1300 / 1200 cc petrol. Pandas can be quite good. Plenty available at affordable prices. More comfortable and practical than one might imagine even for longer distances. Economical too and low insurance. However, they are sort of bears so might not suit...

At this price level condition matters more than make and model, but I agree with others that if you want a suggestion, Japanese and petrol-powered is the way to go. Diesels can cost more to buy and go expensively wrong as they get older.

Madf is right - a 1.3 Yaris would be ideal, or a Corolla or Avensis if you need something bigger. The 1.0 Yaris is underpowered and will be little, if any, more economical.

PS - Make sure that whatever you buy isn't a dog....

Yea I posted this using my mobile and hit the T instead of the R but turned out comical and put a smile I my face. Any other cars named after Big Cats ? Thanks for the advice as before I had completely ignored Japanese cars and was only thinking of British and German but finding German out of price range . Bought a focus previously and turned out a bad buy even for £300 51 plate.

If I get a dog it would have to be a Rover

Cats have inspired more car names than dogs. There was the Panther - a series of handbuilt retro-looking cars made in Surrey. The sports models were rather brought down to earth by having doors which all too obviously came from the Austin-Healey Sprite.

Hyundai Sonata / Kia Magentis (identical car except the badge) 2.0 petrol

ultra reliable.

Just make sure the cam belt has been changed in the past 3 years, if not get it done.

Its a straight forward job on the 2.0 engine, change the pulleys and water while your at it.

As long as the cam belt is changed every 3/4 years, they run to 250,000m comfortably.

Cambelt failure nearly always from neglect by owners is the main killer of these cars.
