Hello, just a quickie- I want to report a UK Toyota dealership and basically get Toyota to sort themselves out, failing that I would like to take it higher- can you advise me on how best to go about this please?

Here are the facts- My wife bought a Toyota Yaris, they told her it was a 1.4 when I viewed it they said it was a 1.0, when I pressed them they admitted they got it wrong?? My wife really wanted the car all the same regardless of engine size, so we deposited it and went to pick it up, when we arrived I asked to see the service history and log books which they had fobbed my wife off with, they said the (try not to laugh) office was closed, but they would send them out- I asked if they had seen them and the salesamn said my wife had, she said she had never seen them so they were clearly lying! The back pedalling continued and so I asked them to sign a letter saying the doumentation would be sent out Monday, this was agreed.

Now the member of staff has remembered he's off Mondays so it will have to be sent another day- odd that? I suggested that if this is how deceitful they are being they may claim they were lost in the post so strongly advised we go today and get the 'mystery documents' when we told them this they said the 'salesman' had put the paperwork somewhere and lost it and they don't know where it is, they are getting decidedly rude now and off and quite frankly I think its appalling for a Toyota main dealership! We are going later to pick the documentation up but I am not expecting it to be there, I want my wife just to give it back and tell them where to go, I can't believe how rude and ineficient they are, no, what liars they are.

Rule 1 Never believe a car salesman.

Rule 2 Never believe a car salesman.

Rule 3 Never believe a car salesman.

Remember those 3 rules and you will never go far wrong.

I would want to see all the documents before handing over any cash, if they don't want to show them its proof they have something to hide.

Main agents seem worse.

What if the car has had for say five owners its cat c and there is no MOT and its never been seviced ,you would not know without seeing the documents you need the information from these documents to make a decision .Buying a car without seeing and digesting the documents is leading for trouble.

(Rule 1 Never believe a car salesman.

About thirty years ago ,I got my first job as a car salesman ,oddly enough with a Toyota dealer .A much older salesman who had worked in the trade for many years instructed me in the basics of the job .

After a week or so he said .Listen lad (I was one then ) the best single piece of advice I can give you ,is to work on the basis that all customers are liars and you'll never go far wrong .

Is it a surprise that we have so many problems in car retailing .With attitudes such as both of the above .

I've been in car retailing myself for thirty years now ,and of course not all buyers are liars ,however a lot are .A good example ,an mg zf I've just taken in described as a great little runner ,needs a new rocker cover gasket ,the plug holes are full of oil , spark plugs and lots of oil .A potential fire hazard ?
In the glove box was a receipt for a new cat and a quote for the gasket replacing. !!

All the villains aren't on my side of the divide .

"....they told her it was a 1.4 when I viewed it they said it was a 1.0,"

The 1.4 is a diesel; the petrol engines are 1.0 and 1.3. If a Toyota dealership can misrepresent on that scale they shouldn't have the franchise.

Pull out of the deal and go and find your wife a 1.3 Yaris somewhere else: in fairness most Toyota dealers are good. Demand your money back and if they argue, threaten that you will take them to court for misrepresentation. Legally you are able to avoid a contract is the other party has misrepresented.

Hello, right I have a full break down of events as I wasn't there yesterday (its hard to believe and agreed the Toyota dealerships are very good- normally)

1. pays deposit asks for service book etc., = its locked in the office (this should have been prepared they had a whole week to have her paperwork ready)

2. States that documents must be sent special or recorded delivery, receives a call from member of staff rememebering its his day off and it will have to be another day!!!

3. Wife rings during work time, staff sem oblivious, chase it up and say the member of staff has ' lost the service manual' (smell a rat anyone?)

By this point I said I didn't like any of it and to take it back and demand money back.

Finally the manual turned up last night missing a stamp and with what I consider very odd mileage extremely low in the time between the last stamp?

Anyway, for Toyota satisfaction all the managers went home on the dot without even staying to sort their poor work out and even attempt to rectify the situation, the member of staff said he needed to get away and lock up by 7:00 and then stated that they could not give her money back but that it would be (quote) 'raised in a metting tomorrow' going back to her car the member of staff stood on the forecourt smoking a cigarette.. This is apalling and I am taking this right to the top.

The moral of the storey is if you cannot see it, touch it or believe it do not part with any money.

Hi, have you resolved your matter? I'm going through the same problem with Toyota! I've been lied to so many times its ridiculous! The customer relations advisor said that they could only act a a mediator and that it was really up to me and the dealer to come to an agreement! I'm fuming as I've spent alot on a car that has had multiple issues to be resolved within the first few months!

I think we need to be told a lot more if we are going to be able to help on this one - if you want our help, that is.

You say, "...I've spent alot on a car that has had multiple issues to be resolved within the first few months!"

What those issues were and what precisely has been done to resolve them is crucial here, as well as what was said between yourself and the dealer from the moment you expressed an interest in buying the car.

I don't think you can infer much from someone else's experience - except possibly that some Toyota dealers aren't up to scratch, which doesn't actually help you very much.
