Citroen Grand C4 Picasso - Battery/connection issue? - Wolfie70

I have a 2016 Citroen Grand C4 Picasso diesel and today, I unlocked it with the key fob but the wing mirrors didn’t unfold. When I got into the car, it wouldn’t start and the main display for the radio etc was off. After some fiddling about, I pressed the button next to the display and the display came on and then I was able to start the car although a very brief message came up in red about the battery but it was so quick that I wasn't able to read it. When it started, 2 alarm sounds went off and have done on the 2 other times I've started it since. This did happen about 9 months ago and I had the battery checked and it was fine and there was no moisture in any of the fuse boxes. I got lucky this time in that I got it going whereas I couldn’t before - it just sorted itself out after a couple of days. I'm concerned it might happen again and I'll get stuck somewhere. Does anyone know what this might be please?

9 months is all of last winter and a long time for an OK battery, to now not be OK, especially if its a few years old.

Have another full battery check, in particular the CCA level - this is the maximum amps the battery has to turn the engine over. I've just had a new battery on an 8 year old Yaris. It was reading a healthy voltage and no problems when charging, but the CCA was only 55% of a new one, which is why it was struggling to start.

Just to add to the excellent advice above, I would get the battery earth cable checked that runs from the chassis to the gearbox. These can be too short and engine vibration can cause the copper wire strands to fracture .

Thanks for your replies both. I've had the battery fully checked and it's shown as being in 'good condition' but needs charging which is strange as just a few days previously, it had had the best couple of runs in quite a while - nearly an hour each way so I would have thought that would have charged it so maybe there's another problem with something draining the battery?

I’m not convinced. How was it tested ?

I took it to a loacl tyre/battery/brakes place and mentioned about CCA beforehand and then asked them about it afterwards too. I'm not sure what else I can do to check it really.

Did they give you a Cca comparison reading? What it should be , and what it actually is ?

No unfortuantely they didn't and it didn't occur to me to ask.

Not sure what these places use as a tester , but some are just red-orange-green devices.

On my recent battery test I was given a print out of the readings. They used a Banner BBT HD1+ giving charging voltage, voltage drop when starting, CCA, charge level and battery health readings.

They also tested the new battery so they were sure it was operating and charging OK and I could also compare the two.

This is a common problem on PSA cars of this era - it will be the battery protection unit (BPGA) which sits in front of the battery. There's probably a fault code for protection relay stuck open or something if you scan it. Almost certainly once it does decide to start, it does so normally without struggling - likely you get a warning about faulty fog lights as well?

The part is not that cheap (c£300) but it's plug and play, no coding required. Seemingly you can get cheap ones from AliExpress, but not sure I would trust them....
