Advice on MPV / 3 child seat friendly car - HT225

Hi there, I would love your advice on buying a used car after seeing lots of helpful threads here.

My wife is shortly due our third child in one month. We've got two other kids, one aged 3 and 3 months, one aged 20 months. So we'll have 3 under 4, which has its own hashtag on social media... We're currently squished into a 2007 Corolla hatchback so this needs to change!

Our budget is £10k max but ideally under. Ideally I want it as cheap as possible because we hardly ever use the car (last few years mileage has been less than <1,000 miles a year...) but as the kids grow up we'd like to use it more for trips out and UK holidays; we also see ourselves using it more for trips to the supermarket / friends' houses once baby number 3 arrives because getting around London on the bus / tube is much harder with 2 young'uns than 3.

Priorities:

1) We live in London so petrol is a must.

2) Reliability - given how intense life with kids is, I do not want the car to give me any headaches! I love how steadfastly our 2007 Corolla has served us so far (123,000 miles with no care or attention from my part...) - I'd love this car to last as long possible - especially given how little we use it.

3) Room in back seat for 3 child seats, ideally 3 rear facing but 2 rear facing will do.

4) Given how little we use it if you have reliable recommendations significantly under £10k, that would be great too.

Cars I've been looking at: smaller MPVs, essentially, to fit the car seats. VW Touran 2016 onwards seems decent but a bit pricy. Toyota Verso seems reliable but we saw one today and it feels a bit small and really unappealing. I've heard mixed things about the reliability of the Renault Scenic and the Citroen C4 Picasso and so I don't want that headache.

I was previously looking at auto cars because my wife hasn't yet passed her test and has found learning VERY slow and difficult. However, it felt impossible to find an auto within budget due to things like unreliable auto gearboxes on so many of the cars above. So in exasperation we've decided to look for manuals instead, and just to accept that my wife won't learn to drive for a while due to the young kids.

All advice much appreciated - autotrader links gratefully received as well!

Thanks.

Because of your extremely low annual mileage, I'd say the most obvious choice would be an EV. Even if you can't charge at home, because of that mileage, it isn't going to be too costly (money or time) to use public chargers. Other benefit is that your wife can just go for the automatic license.

Not sure how they fair for rear seat space re 3 child seats, but assuming it is doable, a 2nd generation Nissan Leaf would be the most obvious choice. Official range for the 40kWh version is 168 miles but real world range seems to be around 120 miles.

Here is a 2022 example on Autotrader with under 35k miles for £8995, which seems a bit of a bargain to me (but plenty of others to choose from).

Not that many about, but you could also look for a Nissan e-NV200, which is a small van based MPV. They come as 5 or 7 seaters, but the cabin is pretty narrow, about the same width as a Honda Jazz. I think the only way you'd get all three in the same row is on one of those Multimac child seats, but they are rather expensive!

Another electric possibility is the Mercedes B Class. Don't know much about them, but here is one on Autotrader

Thanks! Sadly most EVs seem too narrow for three child seats, especially when my children are so young. I have looked into EVs due to the cheap prices at the moment - weirdly, a ten year old used Tesla Model S (which probably WOULD fit three child seats in the back) costs not much more than nine to ten year old auto ICE MPVs, so I was highly tempted to go for that. But I've also read a lot of bad things about the Model S's reliability and repair costs, and the high insurance doesn't make sense given how little I'd drive the car. But still, it's hard not to be tempted.

A multimac might buy you a little time with your current car?

I thought of the multimac but given how expensive it is, it's worth a lot more than the sale value of my current car - didn't seem to make sense to me!

At one point in my life we too had 3 children under 4 (1 then twins)

We found out what was causing the problem.

The solution was a snip!

Most of car problems disappeared.

You could consider a Honda FR-V if you can find a good one. They're a bit old, but they're good family cars.

They have two rows of three seats. The front centre and the two rear outer have isofix points so you can put the forward facing in the front and the rear facing in the back.

This one is petrol, auto and not too far from you, but I would check it carefully as the mileage is low for the age and there is a previous MOT failure for rust (presumably welded)
