I mentioned my daughter had bought her first car which she picked up tonight. So based on her criteria what do you think she opted for?

She's almost 19, passed test on 7 March 2024, had almost a year as a named driver on our Yaris, is working full time and now needs a vehicle.

Criteria were.

Big enough for her and family/friends and a boot large enough for her sports gear.

Reliable

Good for her commute which includes driving around West Yorkshire at rush hour

Also good for occasional longer trips of 1-2 hours to see family and visit sites for work

Sensible insurance quote which needed to include business use

Less than 10 years old

and due to the commute in heavy traffic (and her being lazy!) an auto gearbox.

Yaris?

[EDIT] possibly not - just seen the bigger boot requirement.

Honda Jazz? Good space for people and magic rear seats to configure the boot space.

You didn't mention fuel economy being a requirement in the post, so she could have found a newer lower mileage cheaper to buy version of (hopefully a Toyota anyway) something like an Auris, maybe a petrol auto.

Auris hatchback hybrids arn't as popular with the taxi trade as the estate versions, so maybe one of those.

Alternatively knowing daughters and their tendency to be daughters, something you'd not have recommended, VW with DSG gearbox?

Honda Jazz - flexible space in cabin, 5 seats. sips petrol.

If she actually bought a Jazz - did she budget for the grey hair dye every 4/5 weeks?

Something that didn't fit with her original criteria? BMW 1 series?

Great choice! My daughter bought one in September to replace her Baleno and it is a cracking little car, she loves it! Economical, relatively cheap to insure and a good drive, now that she is used to the CVT gearbox.

I've been trying to get the keys, they are well hidden away.

I have a couple of colleagues with older Suzukis, an SX4 and a Vitara, both close to 10 years old and no issues with either so hopefully this will be good for her for a few years.

It looks to have been owned by what many would see as a typical Suzuki owner.

One owner from new, 4-5k miles a year (less than half that during Covid year), always serviced within a week of date of registration at same Suzuki dealer. Every MOT clean apart from one advisory last time around for a faded indicator bulb, which was changed as they look new.

It's acknowledged older used cars are expensive, but amongst the very overpriced tat she did look at including Skoda, VW, Kia, Hyundai, Toyota, there are good clean cars out there. Search wide and be patient.

She did consider a used EV, but uncertainty as to her useage pattern and insurance quotes meant they were soon off the list,

Friend has a Vitara which seems to be bullet proof so hope your daughter's is as reliable - they do have a good reputation!

Regret that in Covid lockdown, they were shifting pre-reg SX4s for £11k. Wish I had bought a couple then!
