Toyota Yaris, 2015 Automatic. - Why is the resale price of my car so high? - Jacqueline Fowler

HJ is quoting 9 to10 thousand, part ex 7,700.

My car has 40,000 on the clock and runs like a dream, but even so...

This price sounds absurd, but I have always used their pricing when trying to negotiate a deal. If this is correct perhaps I need to sell now and upgrade, even though I love my little car.

Why would it be so high?

Used cars are currently very expensive.

Toyotas are in high demand because they're reliable and have a long warranty

Yarises are in high demand because they're cheap to run.

Automatics are in high demand because people are increasingly not bothering to get a manual licence.

You have the holy grail of used cars!

If you did sell it, just be aware that other cars will also cost more and you get what you pay.for.

I would keep it, plenty of life left in it yet. However if you just fancy a change then that's a good a reason as any to change.

Its overpriced but so will anything else be you buy new or nearly new, unless its an inferior product.

Wow, thanks for the swift replies.

I love this car and would be sad to part with it, and as you say a new car would also be more expensive. Interesting though lol.

Same here. Examples of our 8 year old Yaris are in dealerships at about the same as we paid at 1 year old. Main dealers selling cars of such age was unheard of a few years ago.

With Toyota offering warranties for so long if a car is 'clean', has FSH etc they will happily keep them on their forecourts.

It is also the case that the choice of cheap to run first cars is becoming ever smaller.

My daughter bought her first car last week and I'll do a review of what she considered and what she bought after she gets it.

I bought my car in 2019 for £8,800. I part ex-ed my old Honda Jazz auto for £2,200, so it cost me £6,600 cash. Now 6 years later, my ten year old car is still worth £7,700 part ex! That is a bit crazy lol.

To help you decide-do you happen to know the retail price of the car when it was first registered. This’ll give you some extra info to calculate depreciation against the sky rocketing second hand 2025 prices.

Asking price and actual selling price are two very different things!

Toyota Yaris, 2015 Automatic. - Why is the resale price of my car so high? - Jacqueline Fowler

True! But when I go in to negotiate I always use the prices quoted here and rarely get any argument from the car salesmen. I do a thorough research before I go in, I'm not sure they are used to that from a 'lady driver'. I have always got a deal I am happy with.

I didn't buy it new, so not sure how I would find that out?

Small autos are fetching daft money right now. If you don’t want another small auto then maybe it’s time to sell, but if you do then there’s not much point as the newer one will be silly money too. The Yaris is always an easy sell as there’s not much goes wrong.
Toyota Yaris, 2015 Automatic. - Why is the resale price of my car so high? - Jacqueline Fowler

That actually is a great point. I know finding a 'small' auto has always been difficult because of the ratio of the price of the gearbox compared to the size of the car. I had a really hard time finding a small auto 6 years ago. I had always bought Honda, but their 'new' automatic was a dog to drive. In fact I found the Yaris, did a road test and loved it, but was reluctant to buy it as I thought it was a bit expensive. (lol-ing at that now!) Never had a problem with this car, and although it feels like time to 'upgrade' talking to you guys, I def feel like I just need to keep it.

Most of us here are keen on keeping good cars, and less keen on keeping car dealers in riches.

Chances are the deal you make to trade in for another car would net the dealer at least £2000+ in profits.

Take a good look at your Yaris, does it have some scratches that need sorting and the paintwork given a spruce up, are the alloys looking a bit worse for wear, if so it might be an idea to treat it to a birthday, get everything fully serviced including that all important gearbox service that few people have done, get it fully valetted inside and washed down underneath once the road salt has gone, get the brakes overhauled (few garages service brakes correctly), get a sensible appraisal of the underbody...would it benefit from some underbody corrosion prevention work because most cars would, take no notice of those who say modern cars don't rust for they surely do where most people don't look, is the battery original might be worth replacing that with a good one at your convenience.

Just a few suggestions to help your Yaris provide another reliable 10 years, most Toyotas give 20+ years reliable service given some decent care.
