Tesla Cybertruck - Car Seized - mcb100
Local news this morning are featuring a Tesla Cybertruck being seized by the police in north Manchester as it doesn’t meet UK safety standards.
Presumably the driver thought they’d circumvent the law by registering and insuring it abroad whilst being a UK resident. That’s also illegal, apparently.

Plenty of good reason to sieze it!

Since the influx of people from the EU bringing their own cars since 2004 the Police are much more on the case with foreign registered vehicles.

Am I correct in believing that imported cars need to be properly registered (with all that entails, not just the reg plate) within 6 months of coming in, if the move is 'permanent', i.e. someone buying a car from abroad or moving here to live on a long term basis?

Tighter than that I think. Once you cease to be a 'visitor' you need to get UK plates etc.

That was what kept catching Poles, Romanians etc locally.

And presumably after Brexit there is evidence as to their residency status which was lacking before.

In what way?

Settled Status didn't really change much.

If you have applied for settled status, there is an online register which can be checked. It will be difficult to argue that you are a temporary visitor if your name pops up on the register. If you want to stay longer than 6 months, or work, you require a visa. Again, difficult to argue that you are a temp. Before Brexit, EU nationals could come and go as they wished with no records, so they could always say they were a temporary visitor and it would be difficult/time intensive to disprove this. But then you knew that already.

Point taken about the register but the qualification for Settled/Pre-settled status is time in the UK. People can, and do, come and go as they please and only a lengthy absence would lead to either being lost.

When I moved to Germany, I had a German car delivered to me in the UK and loaded it up with essentials for the family which I delivered to them once the house had been sold and the contents put into storage.

Although resident in the UK, I had a ferry ticket to show I was about to leave and was of the opinion that if challenged I could demonstrate that driving the car as a UK resident was not against the law.

If the driver of the Cybertruck can show he was legally driving it he will be able to repossess it but more likely it will be crushed (after the batteries have been removed, hopefully).

A victory for the Tidy Mind, and an impressive demonstration of State Power, well worth the waste of time and resources.

A Bonus Brexit Emb*****ance Benefit too? Just keeps getting better

I wonder what country it was registered in? I understand these don't meet EU regulations.

Albania according to some reports

Albania seems to let them in and allow them to be registered there.

I've not personally visited Albania, but my best friend and his wife did last year. They travel a lot (no kids) and like to explore beyond the typical tourist destinations.

His quick summary - "Nice people, cheap to live, some lovely coastline. Otherwise lawless. There are no driving standards - literally none. I came close to serious injury - twice - by drivers with no interest in road priority, speed or awareness. Will not go back."

It seems Albania hasn't changed much since WW2.......

"Occupying 11,000 square miles of the Balkan peninsula facing the west cost of the Adriatic Sea with Yugoslavia to the north and northeast, Macedonia and Greece to the east and southeast, Albania was what the Old West might have resembled had Billy the Kid and the Apaches won out over the sheriff and the cavalry"

Isn't that a good thing that police seized it as Cyber truck can't be sold in EU due to valid safety concern?
