Cmax 1.0l ecoboost!! - It is likely my wet belt will fail without warning - J Fife
Hi

I’ve had differing opinions about this and interested in the esteemed opinions on here!

Just bought a 62 plate 65m on clock and the belt hasn’t yet been done.

Full service history though and runs beautifully

Do I just need to get the belt done asap or can I assume some warnings such as noises/low oil pressure warning as suggested on lots of websites…

Thanks for sharing your experience as to whether you’ve seen one ‘go’ without any warning!

I’ve seen them break at 20 k miles , I’ve seen belts at 90 k miles that look brand new. There’s no telling. Certainly if the oil light shows , don’t drive it. Think I’d get it done to be safe . But budget around £1k for the job .

If it’s got a full service history hasn’t it been replaced?

Ford service replacement is 10 years or 150 k miles . Far too long in my opinion. So a 12 plate should have been done .

May be cheaper to drop the sump first and check the oil strainer and while it's off, change the belts. The oil pump's driven by a belt also!

Your title is a statement rather than a question, which is probably appropriate.

I have vaguely heard though that you can measure the belt to detect swelling, though I dunno how reliable that is

I'd think oil analysis (even something simply DIY able like paper chromatography) might provide a warning, but AFAIK theres no available data on that, so you'd be on your own. Without some oil samples from failures it wouldn't be possible to work up a method.

Could a fancy bendy endoscope get you a look at the oil strainer?

Actually measuring oil pressure (which I assume the car doesnt do, because that would be useful) might also give earlier warning

The question would be, how likely is it that my wet belt will fail without warning? And the answer is probably that if anyone knows, they are probably keeping it a commercial secret.

Belt failed on my Sister's 63 plate 1.0 ecoboom in 2023, slightly higher mileage which cost many £1000's to repair. So yes get belt done asap! Hers needed an engine stripdown, new cylinder head and obviously a new belt. It was a close call financially as to whether it was worth doing.
