PLG Dax Cobra - New VED April 2025 - jeremy sollick

I am struggling to find the new tax rate for my vehicle from April. Its current tax class is PLG and the current VED is £345. I am worried it will jump significantly once the new rates are introduced next year but cannot find any info on PLG class

It should just be an inflation-related increase - so £360

Non type approved cars e..g. Kit cars, grey imports, low volume imports etc are taxed at the 1984 - 2001 rates which have up to 1549 cc and over 1549 cc bands.

For the current year the over 1549 cc band is £345, exactly what you paid. For the tax year starting April 2025 the rate will be £360. Not exactly an earth shattering increase, just over 4%.

Nothing to worry about.

360 quid, a year? Bargain given the smooth lovely condition of our roads.

Why the linkage between VED and the state of the roads? The county council is responsible for most of the roads, not central government.

Why the linkage between VED and the state of the roads? The county council is responsible for most of the roads, not central government.

Vehicle Exise Duty (VED) was introduced in 1888 - in 1920 the government introduced Road Fund Licences (RFL) to create a Road Fund for the maintenance of UK roads - this lasted until 1936 when the income went into the general fund and road maintenance came out of the general fund - so for nearly 100 years the myth has persisted that RFL/VED is specifically to maintain the roads.

Maybe time to bring back RFL a ring fenced fund to sort out roads?

When I'm in charge, we'll start with £1 per g/km CO2 emitted VED and 10p per kg of weight RFL.

Counties and Unitaries are responsible but it’s paid for by central government via Highways Block grants,
