Toyota RAV4 - 2014 Toyota - TPMS sensor replacement - jthan

Hi

After nearly 11 years, my 2014 RAV4 needs its TPMS sensors replaced, and I am pondering the best way forward - 'best' in terms of both cost and longevity, as I hope to keep the car (which I have had from new) for many more years. There seem to be three possibilities:

1. DIY replacement - a set of 4 genuine Toyota sensors can be purchased for about £150 - but I believe I would have to go to the dealer for coding, and probably get stung for that.

2. Let a local Toyota dealer replace them - which I suspect would cost rather more.

3. Kwikfit or similar - but I have read (rightly or wrongly) that aftermarket sensors only have half the battery life and that fastfits can only code the generic type (so I could not bring them a set of genuine sensors for fitting and coding)?

Are there any expert recommendations please? This must be a common dilemma nowadays but I haven't found clear pricing information online. Thank you in advance.

I would have thought you only need to replace the sensor that’s faulty? Do you need a set of 4 ? I’d be very surprised if you can a set of 4 for £150 . Any good tyre shop should be able to help you .

The battery life in TPMS sensors is often said to be 5 years - but in practice is mileage dependent as the sensors shut down if the wheel isn't moving and can last much longer.

I paid £120 for a set of 4 for my winter tyres on my VW, so £150 is the right ballpark.

Thank you both. It sounds as if a tyre chain should be my first call.

I do intend to replace them all - at nearly 11 years old, the batteries must all be in similar condition.

The car is low mileage - so perhaps that's why they've lasted until now.

Morbid (and academic) curiosity, but will the car still run if thesensor isn't moving?

I suppose not, since they wouldn't want you (well, me) making them last forever.

Yes it'll still run - it'll display a warning message and will fail a UK MoT but still be driveable.

When I first fitted winter wheels/tyres on my VW Touareg they didn't have sensors fitted, so got the warning every time I started out - but eventually got sensors fitted

Ed, as RT has indicated, my problem is that I have to get it sorted before the MoT in a couple of months.

I share your principles (but to a less extreme extent) and this car actually hasn't seen a garage for almost 8 years, other than for its annual test. I would argue that it's much better maintained that most of those which have been "serviced" though (I change all the fluids periodically; not just the engine oil).

From my point of view too, having to replace the battery operated TPMS sensors is an unnecessary and wasteful nuisance. But I am also averse to bypassing the module in order to cheat the MoT. So I will, unhappily, get them replaced.

The tpms is a testable item as part of the mot , however , if the warning light is on , the tester has to prove that there’s a fault in the system for it to be a failure. The light may be on because of a low pressure. The mot man is not allowed to interrogate the system to establish whether it’s a fault or not . In such a situation, it would have to be a pass and advise . It’s in the mot tester’s manual.
Toyota RAV4 - 2014 Toyota - TPMS sensor replacement - jthan

That is tempting. But unfortunately, at each start, the light flashes for a time before staying on, which the manual says denotes a fault. Low pressure causes the light to come on and stay on without flashing. So I'd be concerned about getting caught out and having the hassle and extra cost of a re-test.

In my unhappy memory of the UK MOT testers dont necessarily follow the rules anyway, so relying on "The letter of the law" might not be a hassle-free tactic.

So if you got some fitted and programmed (I assume a DIY programming tool would be prohibitively expensive) and then took them off, they would require re-programming if you put them back on again, say before an MOT?

A quick word of feedback on the outcome here. I deliberated for a couple of months, but had to take action with MoT date coming up. First call was a local Kwikfit, who advised me to go to the dealer with a Toyota (and that chimed with some other internet posts I had read). Second call was a local Toyota dealer - £700. Third call was another local Toyota dealer - £600, which is what I went with. Roughly £75 per sensor, £4 per fitting kit, £180 labour (not much over an hour), plus VAT.

Courteously and efficiently dealt with, but a lot of money for no purpose other than putting the light out on the dashboard legitimately. Let's hope the new ones last another 11 years!

I think Carista can programme in new TPMS sensors?

Bought 4 steel wheels with winter tyres fitted from My Tyres for our 2015 Note. Needed TPMS sensors which they fitted and programmed all for about £20 a wheel. Just checked and its less than that now.

Simply fitted wheels and drove, came calibrated ready to use. Come summer refitted the factory wheels, drove away and no issues.

Seems that the garages are having a laugh.

I thought the £600 included tyres , which would make it a fair price . Had to read it several times to see it’s only the sensors . What an absolute rip off.

Christ jesus wept !! I would have got the sensors and get a indie to program them ..

As an abstract but related question, can a TPMS system be disabled and the sensors replaced with conventional valves ? The owner would need to check pressures occasionally, but many of us are used to doing that ?

Only for vehicles registered before 1st Jan 2012 - after that they must have a working TPMS system

Strange my 2014 reg Yaris hasn't got them then?

Probably got the ABS based system that does not use pressure sensors.

Nope! No TPMS, or DRLs. I think you'll find the legislation applied only to new models from 2012. Mine's a 2014 reg, pre facelift model (2011 launch). Later (facelift) models of that year had more bells and whistles.

My previous March 2014 Skoda Superb didn't have a TPMS. My son's 2016 Skoda Octavia has an ABS sensor based TPMS.

[EDIT] "In the EU, TPMS became mandatory for all new passenger vehicles in November 2014" I presume the 1st Jan 2012 rule re TPMS is re MOT - if fitted!
