Sons just been lucky enough to be given the use of company vehicle, as per the title its a Ford range, top of the the range, 3.2 twin turbo auto.

While he said its nice to have b***** thing is doing around 15/20 mpg plus being a 9 gear auto it apparently never stops changing gear, the big shock to me was the price of the thing, 45k!!

If he can use the car for his own private use, does he know how much it will cost him in Benefit in Kind (BIK) income tax ?

I suggest that he quickly checks it, especially as it will be classed as a car in future, rather than a Commercial Vehicle.

Good point, I'll ask.him, think it may only be a temporary thing?

Apologies....there are transitional arrangements in place and the vehicle will be classed as a CV as it is currently owned or leased by your son's employer. But best to find out how much it will cost on top of fuel costs anyway.

Family member also had a 3.2, which seized solid following oil pump failure.
Ford (eventually) replaced the engine under warranty.
First drive after that, both front driveshafts simultaneously sheared. Simple reason - when the dealer rebuilt everything, they neglected to put any transmission fluid in the front differential…

Obviously no such worries with a company car.

Mate in the trade told me the oil pumps on them won't self prime, apparently you've got around twenty minutes to complete a oil change!

Sons enjoying it for the moment, slightly better than the ancient Isuzu truck he normally drives around his work place ( he's on a hunting, shooting and fishing estate).

Does this failure affect petrol or diesel engines and how have Ford responded in terms of warranty cover for this failure?

Secondly as the VW Amarok is essentially the same vehicle are they affected too ?

Heard about this elsewhere, ridiculous, quite fancied the 3.2 version in place of a usually more expensive (used) Hilux before i read about this, commical vehicles should be robust and as bombproof as possible.

Does anyone know if this problem affects the Amarok which may be the same vehicle as they are made al9nside each other

The 1st generation Amarok (2010-2020) is pure VW Group, nothing to do with Ford - but the 2nd generation Amarok (2020-on) is simply a rebadged Ford Ranger.

They appear to have different engines though. I can't see a VW with a 3.2 engine but there was one with a 3.0.

Old school friend of mine runs two of these through his structural engineering firm, both were autos and both needed gearboxes before the manufacturers warranty was up. Neither covers a particularly high mileage and both are serviced on schedule. I certainly wouldn’t touch one of the autos.

My colleagues 2017 Amarok suffered DPF problems but was only used on short runs.

Were the gearbox problems on German built Amarok SLO ? because the company decided to bring the production to Germany after lots of quality issues with the Brazilian built early models

I’m not sure what year the cars were from, it was revealed over copious amounts of rum at a party one evening so the details are a tad hazy. All I know is that they were less than three years old, under 30,000 miles and both had gearboxes under warranty. Didn’t stop him leasing two new ones after them though, otherwise quite likeable apparently. Not my kinda thing though.

The Ranger is the top selling vehicle in Australia this year. There are no cars in the top ten. All utes and SUVs.

My son's 2018 3.2 diesel Ranger has suffered catastrophic failures on 3 occasions including gearbox failure, radiator coolant in the engine destroying it - that cost £67k to fix - and part of the crankcase exploding dumping oil on the road. The Ranger is currently sitting on farmland and will be sold as seen for some other fool to attempt a repair. He bought a Toyota instead.

DO NOT BUY A FORD RANGER.

That advice must hold good for the new Amarok too unless there are any differences.

What stood the previous model Amarok from the competition was the ride quality. This is what let the Toyota down IMHO

Just to follow up on my original post my son has given the car back, it was apparently only a temporary thing while he attended a couple of courses on his employers behalf, think it was a bit of a image thing for the company, representative of the company turns up in a big flash vehicle etc.

He's happy to be back in his Aygo and running around at work in the Isuzu pick up, he did say yes the Ranger did look nice in a sort of macho sort of way sitting on the drive but wasn't particularly pleasant to drive around in...

Quite a few Americans would disagree with that.

Before I was banned from the US oil obsessive site BITOG I was involved in a...er... discussion after they panned it for "lack of presence", and confirmed this meant it wasn't bloated enough.

I'd agree its quite bloated, just not bloated enough for a lot of Americans.

Are the problems on the 2020 Amarok and Ranger down to wet belts ?
