Multiple NIPs in one night - Razzz

Dear all,

I would appreciate any advice on my situation. I'm very worried, so please, no sarcastic comments..

I have three main things to ask:

1. I received three NIPs, but since I was away from home due to work (I can prove my residence in a hotel 250 miles away) I only saw the letters after the 28 days period they offered me to respond. I was still able to login in two of the three NIPs - and responded taking the blame of driving - but not the 3rd one. I need to call on Monday but I'm worried about weather they'll let me name me as the driver or not. Any chance this will be escalated to court by default now or can I stop it and convince them to let me name the driver? They sent me a letter saying ''As no reply has been received, your case is now being put forward to our investigation department.''

2. The offenses are in a motorway (M1 Near Barlborough J29a-J30, 58mph over 50mph / M1 Motorway Jnc 12-13 Northbound Bedfordshire, 69mph over 50mph / M1 Northbound J16-J17, 66mph over 60mph). I have already taken the speed awareness course this year. What are my chances of getting offered the motorway awareness course to avoid 3 of the 9 points please?

3. The offenses are within an hour and a half. Any chance I can challenge those as part of one journey?

Thank you in advance for your time!

Just Phone and see what happens.

But the second one is nearly20mph over the limit.

Could be looking at 3 + 6 + 3 points...

and no you won't be offered a course.

Were you the driver? You would surely have been sent a letter asking you, if you're the registered keeper?

Multiple NIPs in one night - RichardW

Unlikely you can get these considered as single offence - they are too far apart, and the two that are closer are in different limits.

Worth a call to the ticket office, if you are only just past the date they may allow a late nomination. However, even if they don't they often dual charge for the offence of Failure to Furnish details and the speeding - and if this gets to court then you can usually do a deal to plead guilty to the speeding if they drop the FTF. Your 69 / 50 is high and will probably attract a court visit and more than 3 points, but hopefully less than 6 so you will avoid a totting up ban. Assuming you have had your licence for >2 years?

without being sarcastic or holier than thou...

What on earth posessed you to knowingly drive for so long above the various speed limits.

Obviously the course you took before had no effect on your driving, so no lesson was learned.

What if that had been over the limit in an urban area and you hit a pedestrian?

No thought for others.

Take your punishment whatever it is and book yourself some IAD course or suchlike.

get yourself a sppedometer app on your phone with alerts.

I think you may need to prove you were in that hotel on the day of the offences ! :-)

No 100% sure, but I think the hotel thing was that the OP was staying away (from home) for work and so didn't receive the initial notification.

But I'm with Maxime on this. The OP has already done a speed awareness course (this year!), the purpose of which is self explanatory, but the reason these are offered is as a means for first time speeders to learn and be more responsible rather than going straight to points and fine. The OP clearly hasn't taken anything on board from the speed awareness course, so maybe a huge jump in insurance costs or a ban (and presumably doing the driving test again) will achieve what the course failed to.

Sorry if you didn't think I was trying to joke, BBD :-) I understood about the absence and the NIP receipt. My idea was that his only escape might have been a solid alibi on the day.

Seems like an incurable offender ?

You need a specialist lawyer who deals with road traffic offences to help you address these questions. If the solicitor can represent you in court, that is excellent. However, not all solicitors are skilled advocates, so they may refer you to a barrister for the hearing. Alternatively, you have the option to represent yourself in court. Typically, these lawyers charge between £250 and £450 per hour.

I used to drive fast (though I’ve never received a speeding ticket) but found a solution by buying a slower car that is less tempting to drive at high speeds.

On a positive note, it’s important to be thankful that this is only about a speeding fine and not a more serious incident, such as causing harm to someone, which could result in a prison sentence.

Additionally, I’ve noticed that many drivers are distracted by phones or their car’s touchscreen systems. This has made me more cautious and mindful while driving.

Buying a slower car is indeed a good suggestion as your post suggests you are habitual speeder.

9 points is not that bad. But you need to be very careful going forward.

Change of attitude is necessary.

Not going to preach about the rights and wrongs of the ofences but a couple of years ago I had a ticket for speeding on the motoray and did the motorway speed awareness course.

A couple of months later I was clocked on the A303 and was offered the "standard" speed awareness course.

So in my experience you can be offered both courses in a short time frame.

I do drive to the limit (mostly!) now.

FWIW I am a bit sympathetic to the poster.

Both my wife and I are careful drivers - neither of us had received a speeding ticket in over 30 years. However my wife got caught twice on the same stretch of road on the same day taking my daughter to Nottingham Uni (this was some years ago).

When I subsequently did this same journey I understood why she was caught. It was an A road with many changes of speed, 30 to 50 then back to 30 then to 40 etc. and I think it was fairly easy to miss one of the repeaters, which is what she cleary did (on more than one occassion).

At the time, when the first two letters came through the post we were very concerned if there were many more on the way, fortunately they weren't.

I'm a bit nervous on unfamiliar A roads now, even when using a driving app, and suspect I'm often going 30 when the limit is much higher, and frustrating drivers behind me.

A sat nav with speed limit warnings has saved me often on unfamiliar roads..

Would not go without it.

Does your satnav rely on a geographical database of limit locations (which may not be 100% up to date) or do you need a camera looking for road signs (in which case they may miss those hidden by greenery or covered in green crud which authorities fail to remove) ?

Sat Nas I sued - Google Maps and TomTom - both use a database - pretty good most of the time but do get the odd one wrong now and again

Garmin database updated every 6 months or so.

Garmin database updated every 6 months or so.

Relying on 6-month old speed limit information will catch you out sooner or later - use it like limit repeaters but the mk1 eyeball should be the primary method of detection.

Garmin updates?

I have FTTP - 150Mbps

I was attempting to download the update to a 16Gb memory stick - it took an hour!

Finding a 16Gb memory stick also took time. Warned on instructions that bigger & smaller memory sticks can cause problems.

Download speed started and climbed to 17Mbps for about a minute and then it fell back to 2 to 3Mbps.

Hassle, not just for me BUT many others going by the bad press Garmin gets from other Honda users (& presumably non Honda versions).

It's not a new problem, it's been going on for years - here & the USA and presumably Europe.

Transferring the data to the Sat Nav was equally painful - about 25 minutes! You have to sit in the car with the engine running!

I do not use SatNav very often but handy for odd time it's needed.

My old CRV needed a DVD - buying a new disk was less painful.

A son's BMW gets refreshed over the emergency phone sim card. Painless!

Multiple NIPs in one night - RT

Do you actually need the engine running?

When I'm doing map updates on my VW Touareg it's sufficient to attach a smart charger to the battery and keep the ignition on but without the engine started - can take an hour or two

Multiple NIPs in one night - Falkirk Bairn

Honda Instructions are to keep the engine running during update.

Garmin instructions 16Gb Memory stick & keep the engine running

If speed limit is sign is unreadable, then I believe driver can argue it is unenforceable.

Not if it's a 30 mph limit defined by streetlights - or other limits where repeaters are visible.

Multiple NIPs in one night - Theophilus

Waze (or Google Maps?) will show the speed limit and turn red if the limit is exceeded - it seems to be updated daily.

Neither can be relied on as errors do occur.

Use your eyes and your sat nav as a double check - shouldn't be able to go too far wrong - it's really not that hard.

And Garmin has now lost interest in a lot of Honda's sat navs. My 2017 (67) will no longer get any more updates and I've heard some Jazz's up to 2020 won't get any more.

Something to do with lack of memory!
