So, last weekend we went to a Honda main dealer, found a car we liked and test drove it.

We had a 2014 car to trade in that was in very good condition and after the salesman looked over it agreed a price.

We then had all the finance documents and the dealership order form emailed, all now signed and ready for car to be collected on Thursday.

Anyways, today a advisory warning comes up on the dash, that the stop start function is inactive, looking at the possible reasons, it's either most likely batter or sensor related. Can't be charging as I had the alternator changed 3 months ago.

So. My question is, do i book this on and get the fault fixed or do I just drop it off as is and drive away in my new car.

The salesman has already said they wouldn't be selling my car on their forcourt and the fault isn't a major one as it's not red.. It's just amber and is altering to the fact that the stop start function isn't available... But I'm in a pickle wether to fix or not.

If you want to be upfront you inform the dealer on Thursday, they may or may not make a slight adjustment

See that's the issue, I'm not sure I want the hassle on Thursday, but am I legally obliged to inform them?

.... am I legally obliged to inform them?

Yes, if they ask you if you know of any faults. Otherwise not. Plenty of cars are sold without information being divulged.

Most common fault for the stop/start not to work is a battery issue. If the car is driving ok , I wouldn’t bother fixing it . A 14 year old car will be going to auction, so not your problem.

Car drives perfect, I've always looked after it, it's got a fsh and if ever there was issue it got sorted as soon as it presented itself, so I know it's in good mechanical shape, just bad timing for this fault to pop up. My conscious is telling me I should either fix it or mention it, but on the other hand, my head is saying leave it, it's not a major fault and it's probably just going to auction, I wonder if there would be any legal issues if I pick up role new car and then they see the fault after I've left?

Once the deal is done , and your car is at the dealers , I very much doubt any one is going to look at it , let alone drive it . It’ll be put in the compound with all the other trade ins , waiting for the car transporter collection.

Do you just do short journeys, or not use the car for several days? If so, either give the car a longer run, to fully charge the battery, or put it it on a battery charger. If that solves the problem, then it's not your problem.

The stop/start on my 2012 Civic always failed to operate once the colder weather set in from its being a year old. The dealer checked it under warranty and found no fault. It’s just that it wouldn’t engage unless several parameters were met. Most of these are temperature and electric load measurements. I can’t remember them all but they had a pre-printed customer list to give me as it’s a common problem/characteristic. It went for weeks without operating then, come warmer weather, it would kick in again.

Charging the battery may help but I remember doing 350 daylight miles in winter and it still wouldn’t play ball.

In any case it’s a minor issue as far as a trade in is concerned. If you look hard enough any 10 year old car will have something not quite right.
