Renault Clio - Day time running light issue - malct

Hi All

My car is a 2017 Clio so comes under a different rule regarding day time running lights and MOT, So i believe that if the day time running light isn't working , Then it won't effect the MOT.

I have just had a mayor service on my car and i knew that the passenger side day time running light was having issues and after the service i was made aware that the issue with the Day time running light would be a fail on the MOT because when you turn on the side lights, The Passenger side day time running light would turn off instead of dimming. I told the guy that my car comes under the old rules but told me that it didn't matter , it would fail.

So basically, When i am driving during the day , The DRL are on, But once i turn on the side lights, Both sides are meant to dim but only the drivers side dims.

The Guy at ATS thinks it may be a issue with the wiring and that i should see someone who deals in car electrics.

So i am looking for advice or if anyone else has had the same issue.

On another note, The car has a failed drivers side coil, So booked in to be replaced at a cost of £180, Not sure if that's a fair price

On the Gov web site it states Daytime running lights will be checked on vehicles first used from 1 March 2018 So I am unsure if the guy is correct or not.

legal or not, I will still need to fix the issue

PS , I am sure that he was saying that the daytime running lights are the sidelights hence the MOT Fail

Any lights fitted must work regardless of the cars age, stab in the dark but it could be a poor earth.

£180 to supply and fit a spring sounds about right to me.

Drls are not testable on a car of this age for the mot . However if the drl is part of the side/ position light then that’s a problem. It’s unlikely to be a wiring problem if it works ok with ignition on . There’s only 2 wires to the light and the reduced illumination is controlled by the body control module. System needs investigation.

I don't know how easy it is to remove these DRLs but if i can remove both of them and connect the working side to the passenger side and see if its a light fault and visa versa with the other one

They are screwed from behind the bumper, so you’ll need to remove some of the plastic undertray and wheel arch liner

I have tried to get to the DRLs, Its impossible for a DIY person, I removed the Plastic undertray and wheel arch liner and i could see the back side of the DRL and wires but that's all , looks like Renault have it sewed up so that you need to take it to them,

Question is , Will this be a MOT fail on a 2017 car?

I have tried to get to the DRLs,... looks like Renault have it sewed up so that you need to take it to them,

Well, any decent bodyshop will have to be able to do what you need to ?

It will be a mot fail , if the drl works as a side/ position light .

honest John says the following No, the car will not fail the MoT. Daytime running lamps are only inspected on cars first used on or after 1 March 2018

Looking on youtube, The easiest way to replace the running lights is by taking the bumper off the front, 2 bolts and a few screws removing the bonnet catch cable and unplugging the electric cable . However i am going to contact a body repair shop who may do this for me since it wont take them long. I can order a new DRL but while the bumper is off, We can try the right side on the left to see if its the DRL and if its not the DRL then i can get a refund on the one i bought and then its an electrical fault .

For a 2017 Clio, DRL issues shouldn't affect the MOT since new rules apply from 1 March 2018. However, fixing the DRL is still wise. £180 for a coil replacement is reasonable, but consider getting a second opinion for peace of mind. Using academized.com/do-my-homework was a great decision. The assignment was completed efficiently and met all my specifications. A friend had recommended it, and I was impressed with the quality and speed of their work. The writer’s attention to detail and adherence to deadlines were impressive. This service helped me manage a heavy workload and ensured that my homework was completed to a high standard. I am very satisfied with the results.

It doesn’t need a body shop to remove a bumper - any garage with will be able to do it.

I’m with advice above, regardless of whether your car has mandatory DRL’s or not, if they’re there then they need to work correctly.

Drls only need to work correctly if they incorporate the side / position lights , on a car of this age .

I find the subject of side / position lights confusing since when its dark , My side lights are on so people can see my car. The guy at ATS was telling me that when i turn on the side lights, Then the DTR dim so not to dazzle people and act like a side / position light. I know that i need to get it sorted out.

I thought about disconnecting them until i am able to to get them sorted since the car stands out with one not working

If the front side / position lights are not part of the Drls , then just disconnect both of them to get it through the mot .

Just back from the Garage, There is water , Most likely a build up of condensation which has created a short and blown the light , New light on order, Around £160 fully fitted inc DRL
