This is a great car, used daily, utterly solid. Mechanical parts are usually the same as Honda UK's cars, but bodywork parts are not. Unfortunately there is now a crack on the windscreen large enough to require the whole screen replacing. Honda UK will not help me, beyond supplying a part number. I am enquiring about importing a new screen from Japan (I did successfully import a door mirror last year) but I have heard something about a glass company in the UK that makes bespoke screens. Has anyone any experience of this service please?

If you have a part number from Honda UK I would advise importing the correct part from Japan. If it's the correct part number it will fit.

If a UK company makes the screen, how do you know it will fit?

A one off production requires a mould plus lamination .

Then testing to ensure it meets vehicle standards. And fits . Might take several attempts.

Expect no change from £250k or A LOT more,

A colleague needed a 'screen for a MK1 Elva Courier (I'd never heard of them neither) and a windscreen company cut down a lorry 'screen to fit.

A colleague needed a 'screen for a MK1 Elva Courier (I'd never heard of them neither) and a windscreen company cut down a lorry 'screen to fit.

The MK1 had a flat screen, so the windscreen company would have just had to find another vehicle using a flat screen they could cut to fit. The MK2 had a proprietary screen, not sure what from but possibly a Triumph Spitfire.

But it reminds me of a story my Dad told me about. The Daf tipper truck he dove needed a new screen but the boss wasn't to keen on shelling out for a genuine one from Daf. So they had a local outfit (this was the Shetland Isles, in the early 80's) cut one and fitted it. But within a day it had cracked. Had another go and had the same result. Only then did someone think to have a closer look and found that while the screen looked like it was completely flat, it actually had a very slight curve!. After which, a proper screen was duly ordered!

As for the OP, I'd try to find out were else the 2nd gen Stream was sold (I'm thinking the USA?) as it may be cheaper from somewhere other than Japan. But, there is undoubtably going to be a risk having such a large screen shipped from anywhere, and the further it is coming from, the higher that risk will be.

Warning to all who take advantage of cheaper imports - they can come back to bite you.

More constructively:

- can it be prepared - some companies claim they can do "magic"

- the kit and classic car mob may be able to provide some good leads if a one-off is the solutuon

Many thanks. I will probably have to try importing it. Unfortunately the car is too rare to find in sc***yards

Presuming you've tried firms that specialise in Japanese imports?

These appear to list a screen for a Honda Stream - www.japeurocarparts.co.uk

Whether it's the right one.......

Pretty sure nobody takes advantage of cheaper imports, principally because they aren't cheaper.

People buy imports because they really like the car/the car is just better/they are much better equipped/they are in much better condition than a non imported equivalent.

Just noticed a reference in today's Times for 'Windscreens for classic cars' which may be worth a look : <windscreensforclassics.com> from Pilkington Classics. I guess they may concentrate on UK models, but who knows ?

Thanks, I will check that. The price of this piece of glass on import from Japan, including delivery is looking like some £1500. :(

May be worth looking at amayama.com

They are Japanese car parts aggregator - they can source parts from various distributors, pack and ship them to the UK. Like Autodoc I guess

I got some trim parts for a Subaru BRZ. Prices were good and shipping very quick

Might not be cheap given the nature of what you're ordering, but maybe worth a look

Thanks, I may bear them in mind for other parts, but they say on their website they do not supply glassware internationally

I remember in one of the episodes of Wheeler Dealers they had a bespoke front screen made. Can’t remember which car it was unfortunately or the supplier. Maybe give Mike Brewer a call?

This is why I had to reluctantly part with my Honda Element.

Yes it shared a good degree of parts with the 2nd gen CR-V, but by no means every wear and tear component. Three months and considerable shipping expense getting hold of brake callipers, being one of a few painful examples
