Audi A5 Cabriolet - Windscreen Replacement. How many opportunities? - _G_

A stone chip saw to my windscreen cracking in the 'A' zone a few months ago. A replacement was arranged via Auto Glass.

The first screen was defective. There was light visible at the bottom of the screen.

The second screen has smears on the inside by the camera (rear view mirror) meaning that the lights are stuck on high beam.

A third screen is on order now as the engineer noting the warranty claim said the screen required replacement. There is no way of accessing those smears from behind by dismantling the rear view mirror housing apparently.

Can I tell AG, I want my local Audi dealership to take care of the replacement screen? Do the same laws apply as if one were rejecting a car within 30 days? The screen is under warranty but I am worried about what they will break or fit incorrectly next.

Thank you.

Modern cars fitted with Adas systems can be very fussy when it comes to windscreen replacement. Not unusual to encounter calibration issues with the camera if a non genuine screen is fitted .

I expect not. You have no contract with Auto Glass, your contract is with your insurers. Contact them and tell them about the issues and that you want Audi to sort the mess at no cost to you.

Imagine it’s a Chinese copy screen that AG seem to fit unless you make a great deal of fuss .

I gave up into end and accepted the Chinese one .

Do any companies fit an OE screen either Pilkington or Sicursiv?

When Autoglass fitted my A4 replacement screen it was so badly fitted that the VIN number didn’t align with the clear bit so you couldn’t read it. I complained and stipulated that I wanted an Audi windscreen for the second fitting. I found out that the guy who fitted my first screen had only been doing it for days.

Whatever happened to good old high quality Triplex? The original windscreen on my TR7 (44yrs old and 73k miles) is noticeable clearer with fewer microscratches and chips than my original Audi A8 one (18yrs old and 76k miles). They have had much the same driving experience. Did Pilkington becoming Nippon result in lower quality?

In spite of my protestations AG still fitted a Fuyao Chinese windscreen to my A4 . Thinner glass and not a patch on my original Sicursiv screen, even though they insist it is.

It seems the only way to get a genuine OE screen is to have one fitted at a main dealer. My friend paid £600 for his MB when he decided not to claim on his insurance because of his age !

Is a Triplex screen from c1980 laminated glass?

Mum's Mini of a few years earlier had so called toughened glass that shattered into thousands of pieces when hit by a stone.

That's what toughened glass was designed to do. I had a split windscreen Moggie Minor that had what I presume to be laminated glass. One side started going 'milky', probably from moisture ingress. I doubt it was toughened and would likely had broken into large shards.

<< That's what toughened glass was designed to do. >>

Way back, before windscreen glass was 'toughened', screens would make sharp-edged shards just like everyday window glass. Toughened glass shatters with much blunter corners, causing less serious injury.

It sounds like you've had issues with your windscreen replacements! Contact your insurer and ask them to have an Audi dealership handle it to ensure you get a proper OE screen without any more problems.

Tried that but they are contracted to AG and I presume the Chinese copy part screens cost a fraction of the OE screens .

I specifically requested AG fitted a OE screen but they still turned up with a Chinese copy . They tell you that they don’t know when a OE screen would become available.

Has anyone been able to get a decent screen fitted ?

I did but it was a Citroen dealership in France. Insurance (LV) paid after the usual excess.

More recently for the Skoda (now with Direct Line) Autoglass fitted an 'OEM equivalent'. Seems OK but I've no auto lights or wipers.

My poverty spec Yaris cracked a screen last year. AG wasn't the insurer's approved supplier, so I had to drive some way to get a replacement. Glad to see the new one was Pilkington, but for all I know, they're now a Chinese company.

Chatting to the fitter, he said it was good to do a simple replacement (other than sticking the mirror on) as so many modern cars have radar cruise, auto lights and all sorts of other stuff that has to be set up. He said it can take a few hours or more!
