My son is a victim of the many VW badge thefts currently taking place in North London. The theft will be formally reported and he will talk to his insurance company

VW are denying there is a design fault that makes it easy to unscrew the badge and access the sensors fitted behind. The cost of replacement and restoration to full functionality is apparently around £1600 minimum. Having had the work done there is of course no guarantee that the thieves will not succeed again.

What are my son's options? Have the badge replaced at his own expense, have the work done through his insurance company and be exposed to higher future insurance premiums or just trade in this car for another model having established best trade in value before and after badge replacment .

Key question though-Why aren't VW being more helpful ?

It’s not the badge that’s the problem. The adas radar sits directly behind the badge. When this is replaced, the system needs recalibration and a set up procedure. That’s the expensive part of the operation. Can’t see any way of preventing a theft here .

or just trade in this car for another model

All newish cars have radar gubbins at the front now - Euro requirement. On many it seems rather "prone"

An interior mounted camera system is far better option if theft is an issue.

Peugeot 308 has a badge made from Indium, which is apparently the only metal that’s transparent to radar, so no need for a separate panel for the forward facing radar.
The new 3008 has gone back to a plastic badge with the radar mounted low in the grille.

For interest, have been told by VW that the VW T-Cross does not have radar gubbins etc housed behind the front badge.
Hope thieves know this!

Is this just a trend like back in the 80s i think, kids prising VW badges off presumably to mount on an altar and worship in their bedrooms.

As for parts thefts in general, as we descend into the deliberately designed lawless society things will only get worse, it used to be alloy wheels but too much effort and not enough profit unless rare or desirable, quicker and higher profit to steal cat converters and prise £3000 (ludicrous things) headlights from German marques, literally no chance of being caught by those currentaly masquerading as the police and if you should be foolish enough to prevent such a theft even from your own vehicle are likely to be arrested yourself....welcome to Lunacy the country formerly known as Gt Britain.

Kids stole them to use as medallions as per The Beastie Boys (a popular music ensemble of the time m’lud).

Wonder if anything can be done to slow down the criminals or put them off in the first place such as holding the badge down with cable ties ?

If the radar is not behind the badge, then £1600 sounds like a very expensive repair for just an emblem. I think VW are getting confused with the windscreen camera device.

The sensor IS behind the badge.

To be clear-can anyone else confirm kindly that sensors etc either are or are not housed behind the front badge of a VW T-Cross Repeat-I am referring to the T-Cross, not the T-Roc

Thread heading amended as per OP confirmation

I'm not 100% sure, but because of that price I'd assume there are radar sensors involved. It's either that or VW are charging £1600 just for a badge, which doesn't seem very likely to me!

But if you want to know or sure, I'd have thought a VW forum would be the place to ask.

Most definitely fitted behind the VW badge , along with other current models. A friend works in a body shop and these radar cameras are going missing all the time . He’s just replaced 2 units on a 23 and 24 plate bmw vehicles. Even easier to remove . Just clipped into a bracket in the lower part of the bumper.

The T-Cross handbook shows the front of the car and for the VW emblem indicates 6 "

Behind the Volkswagen badge: radar sensor for assist systems"

Surely if the radar camera is missing, it would cause a warning message on the dashboard! Are you getting any warning lights or messages? Have you tried the Vehicle Status menu (It's Vehicle Status on my VAG car (SEAT Ibiza))?

VW badges, for the T-Cross, seem to start at around £45 on eBay! Not saying they will be the right ones for your car.

Further piece of info-an independent garage have quoted £400 to supply /fit belt and “sensors”-but that doesn’t mean thieves won’t have another go.

Think he means "badge and sensors"? Probably using second hand parts..

I would guess that , so someone else’s stolen parts .
