Hi,I'm looking for some advice on buying a used automatic diesel ( up to £9,000). My only two needs is the best MPG possible from an auto and that it meats euro 6 standards I'm open to size, make and year. I cover around 15, 000 miles annually avaraging 60 - 70 mph with a little in towns. I've read quite a lot online about PSA's bluehdi diesels, I see the Citroen C4 bluehdi returns great mpg, likewise the Peugeot 208 1.6 bluehdi. Also I've heard the Skoda Octavia and Renault Clio 1.5 return great mpg

What's the ultimate when it comes to MPG?

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you

MPG isn’t the be-all and end-all when it comes to overall running costs. A small petrol Mazda 2 with a simple torque converter transmission will do more than 50mpg easy enough, which might be 7-10mpg worse than a similar diesel, but there’s much less to go wrong. There’s no turbo or DPF to go fail, EGR issues are unlikely and there’s no timing belt to snap plus there’s no complex automated manual gearbox that’s prone to eating itself. On top of this petrol is cheaper to buy.

Small petrol autos that are good on fuel and much much more robust than any of the cars you mention include.

If you don’t travel much more than 60 miles in radius from home then a Nissan Leaf 40kw could be a worthwhile option. Ours costs peanuts to run.

O thank you I should certainly broaden my horizons, the petrols and electrics sound like they could give the diesels a run for there money. Like a lot of folk I was always told diesels are more economical for higher mileage, but things have changed so much. There's a nissan dealer nearby I'll check out the used leaf's

Only consider a Leaf if you have off street parking and can fit a home charger. Public chargers are unreliable too expensive, wiping out any real saving.

And petrol costs less than diesel as well.

I reckon that the higher cost of diesel fuel (roughly) cancels out its slightly better consumption figures in today's cars, like for like. Doing 15,000 miles a year uses about 1150 litres @ 60mpg or 1360 litres @ 50mpg. At £1.50 a litre the difference is worth just over £300. Not insignificant, but pretty small in the whole cost of changing a car to get better fuel consumption.

The best approach is to drive your car so as to maximise the mpg you get,

15,000 miles at 60mph is 250 hours at the wheel. In reality, your average speed will be lower than that - unless you live in a motorway service station.
I think I’d rather be prepared to sacrifice a bit of economy to drive something I actually enjoy (or tolerate) driving, rather than spend every minute hating what I chose simply to get another couple of mpg.

O thank you, yes I think I did over estimate how fast I'm usually going, I also didn't take into consideration the fact that there's a lot of hills around us. Eye it's very true get something you like. I currently have a Renault Clio 2012 1.5 eco diesel which I've not had any issues with and . It reads around 59mpg on the dash.
