Skoda Karoq 1.5tsi DSG - One year in - Adampr

I've had the Karoq for a year and about 10,000 miles now, so thought it was time for a quick update.

Two very minor problems when I first got it:

1. 12v sockets weren't working. I changed what I thought was the fuse to no avail.

2. One of the rear tyres had a (very) slow puncture. One day whilst topping it up I noticed that it said 'inside' on the sidewall facing me.

Both issues resolved with no fuss at all by Capitol Skoda, Newport. They even let me have a courtesy car for the day, although let's just say it went back a lot cleaner than when they gave it to me.

The Karoq has two jobs for our family; I use it drive to work (65 miles each way) once or twice a week and it's our family car for trips away. It does both admirably and averages about 45mpg, which I think is pretty good for a car of its size.

The engine has an uneven idle for about 10 seconds just after starting. It could be a software.issue, but I've not had it.looked at as it goes away before the Android Auto connection is made and I've set off anyway. The on-board satnav is, of course, useless but the infotainment is otherwise pretty good.

DSG is shifting smoothly with no concerns there. The (engine) oil needed a couple of hundred ml top up after 9,000 miles. No other issues - the slow puncture went when the tyre got reversed. The fuel cap latch needs to be lubricated every now and then as it starts to get sticky.

I'm still very pleased with the cream leather interior and it's holding up well. My wife and son like the little trays and cup holders in the back and are happy being carted around. The seats are very comfortable and the cabin is quiet. From giving a colleague with the diesel version a lift, I am led.to.believe that the petrol is much more refined.

The engine is pretty good. Very responsive, particularly at lower speeds. I would like a bit more grunt, but a Daimler Super Eight is the only car that's ever satisfied me in that regard

Handling and ride are good and it's surprisingly agile for a big soft car. One thing I have noticed is that if the ride gets upset, say by a pothole or dip in the road, it sets off this kind of oscillating bounce that can be quite unsettling.

It didn't come with a spare wheel, but does have room for a space saver, so I've bought one.

All in all, I'm happy with it. I am still thinking about replacing it with a Kia Stinger at some point, but the itch hasn't set it yet.

Excellent review, thank you. Pleased you're happy with it. These owner reviews are one of the Backroom's great strengths.

Always good to read a genuine review and appraisal. Interesting point about the fuel filler flap. Vag models have changed from a plunger pin type lock to a rotary device. Always in trouble now.

That's exactly it - it's like a T profile that rotates when depressed. Very sensitive to getting gummed up or frozen.

I'd just like to echo Xileno's previous point, "These owner reviews are one of the Backroom's great strengths". Long term feed back is a lot more helpful than a review when the new car smell is still there.

12v sockets weren't working.

Do you mind me asking what the problem turned out to be?

One day whilst topping it up I noticed that it said 'inside' on the sidewall facing me.

It's really concerning that a tyre fitter can fit an Asymmetric tyre the wrong way round. Mind you, not as bad as seeing a car with Directional treads facing the wrong way.

Think the chances of your average main dealer being able to fix this are rather remote. Living with it is the best option.

I'd say that is excellent for this size of car.

Same type that my car has. Not had a problem with it, but it might be because I keep my car garaged at home and park in a sheltered multi-storey at work. Do you know if it's the T profile that sticks in the flap, or is it the T profile that sticks where it comes out of the body?

Glad you're liking and getting on well with the car.

12v socket was either there are two fuses or I'm an i**** and changed the wrong one.

Yes, the tyre was a bit weird. I think it was brand new, so the dealer had probably done. The service rep looked extremely annoyed (not at me) when I pointed it out. It's kind of embarrassing ths they do these 'x hundred point' checks and missed two very easy ones.

The 1.5 TSI had an issue with hesitancy that was supposedly fixed by a software update. Some people say the update fixed it, others say it did nothing. I know mine has had the update, and I think this idling issue is a residual effect of that.. It annoyed me at first, then I realised it is completely inconsequential and it no longer bothers me at all. As I said. It stops before I set off unless I decide to play getaway driver.

With the fuel filler lock, I presume that pressing the flap is supposed to push the latch in turn, causing it to twist open. I think the mechanism of the latch (i.e. the bit sticking out of the body) probably gets stuck and doesn't twist. Whenever it's happened.to me, a sharp whack with my hand is enough to release it. It comes up a lot on the Karoq Facebook page and the advice there is always to lubricate it. Apparently, when it's very cold, the headlight washers can pop out and the doors can even misalign and jam. I live in the south west, so never been cold enough to experience either.
