Rolls Royce Spectre - EV long bonnet - movilogo

Rolls Royce Spectre is world's most luxurious EV, starting at £300k.

What I don't understand what the long bonnet is for!

It has no engine there, no boot (frunk) either. I watched few videos of Spectre in YT but none showed under the hood. One video mentioned one needs to open bonnet only for washer fluid top up.

I feel being an EV does not require such long bonnet but RR is too afraid to lose their signature shape which they had for a century.

Sorry but, I will never be able afford such a car, and I rather suspect most here wont either, so for me I do not care. I can think of better things to spend so much money on then a flippin car.

1It weighs 2.9 tons. I can only assume the long bonnet is where they hide the batteries

It has a lot of batteries and two motors.

If you don't know the answer you don't need to post

If you’re designing as an EV from the ground up, you can package things differently.
For example the heater/fan assembly that usually lives on the cabin side of the bulkhead can now move under the bonnet because it’s not having to share the space with a hulking great V12 and bellhousing that create huge amounts of wasteful heat.
Thus creating more space in the cabin.
I’ve no idea whether this is the case with the R-R - I have seen a test car, but not close up.

I found only one image of the internal of this car. It shows battery underneath, not inside bonnet.

They probably use that diagram to assemble them in the factory. The level of detail is breathtaking!

And if it gets close to 2.9 miles per kWh I’ll be suitably impressed (and surprised).

For what the majority of RRs are used for (very rarely and as posh taxis) EV actually makes sense.

Think you have answered your own question here!.

While there is certainly an argument for making more use of the packaging opportunities given by a "clean sheet" EV design for a saloon car or limousine, the Spectre is a fastback/coupe and as such, image and style is paramount. Seems there is plenty of space for four occupants, so its not like using the proportions of an ICE equivalent has compromised accommodation. As for the company trying to do anything other than traditional RR proportions?, it is fraught with risk, just look at the Cullinan!

Re under bonnet space, I believe there is a storage area for the charging cables. Maybe not brilliant (given the proportions of the car), but better than having to keep them in the boot.

The other question I have is why it has only 2 doors!

After spending £300k on a car, how one can tolerate getting into rear seat in an inelegant way?

Or typical buyers of these cars don't use rear seats?

I have no doubt there will be a 4 door Rolls Royce EV before long for those who want\need extra practicality and/or easier rear access.

But the Spectre is taller than you'd think* for a 2 door fastback coupe, so I doubt access to the rear would be too difficult for most.

*At 1559mm tall, it is taller than many small SUV/Crossovers!

And rear hinged (suicide) doors help enormously with access and egress.

That article did indicate space was wasted under the bonnet.

That was interesting, especially, "the average age of a Rolls-Royce buyer has dropped from 56 in 2010 to just 43 – lower than that of a Mini."
