Sad to see the new Toyota Prius is not coming to the UK. It looks superb. I know there are good reasons why it is not coming over here but it is a shame they have dangled this stunning looking car in front of us only to make it ultimately out of reach.

Toyota have said:

'With our evolving UK product strategy and changing market conditions, we have taken the decision not to introduce the new generation Prius in the UK as the new model represents a very different proposition to its predecessor, alongside a clear shift in UK consumer demand towards more SUV style vehicles.'

So basically they think no one in the UK will buy one, or at least not enough to make a right hand drive version as they will be selling it in Europe.

Is it still using the outdated Chademo connector? Is it still the only EV not to use liquid cooled battery pack? Then better choices are available.

It’s a hybrid :).

And a PHEV :))

I've never thought the Prius a good looking car in any guise, but the new one isn't bad at all in 3 door form. Toyota's dog must have run off with the ugly stick.

Assuming it will be sold in Japan, there will already be a rhd version. So they could at least give it a try.

I am sure those in the minicab business will import JDM spec versions if they exist, as they already do in large numbers for existing JDM vehicles.

So it's just down to they think it won't sell. A shame as we do miss out on a few cars that are available in Europe.

Shame, it’s a nice looking thing and will no doubt be absolutely bombproof. But sales of the previous model were poor here, not just because Brits favour small SUV’s, it’s largely because it was ugly as sin and much more expensive than the equivalent Auris Hybrid, which wasn’t much less efficient.

The UK is no longer an important market for Toyota, Europe is.

UK product range has reduced in last couple of years, UK customers get less standard equipment & availability of optional extras.

No new Prius or Corolla Cross, the Camry & Corolla saloon pulled from sale.

What comes to the UK is decided by Toyota GB not Toyota Europe - the products are there for Toyota GB to draw from if they choose to, they just reckon that the potential sales of Prius, Camry & Corolla saloon in the UK don't justify it. Prius sales in the USA have been on a marked decline over the last 2 years, the relatively recent introduction of the hybrid drivetrain option for the Corolla there won't have helped. I would not be surprised if this is the last generation of Prius in this form (they may reuse the name though for something else).

Going by reviews that I have seen of Corolla Cross v RAV4 in North America Toyota UK may well have decided that they were too close & possibly would compete against each other.

I can’t help thinking that it’s served its purpose.
When Prius arrived, it has running gear unlike just about anything else out there, and the styling reflected the technology.
Now, full hybrids are commonplace and there are hordes of more practical alternatives, so no need for a car as distinctive as the Prius was.

On the bright side if you import one from Ireland you will have exclusivity if head turning is a consideration.

Amazing Ireland belives it worth selling while Toyota GB doesn't. As SLO has pointed out the outgoing one is ugly as sin, sales of course reflecting this. The new model is such a looker I'm sure it would have been worth selling and perhaps there'll be an about turn over the TGB's decision.

A very good review by Matt Watson on what we're likely to miss out on. I wonder how easy or difficult it would be to import one from Ireland?

Don't you just drive it over the border and kick up a fuss?

Ireland, despite being so close to the UK, has different car tastes. They’re big into Toyota - it would not be far off to say that every other car on the road there is a Toyota.

They also prefer saloons as opposed to hatchbacks. Cars are dearer in Ireland and many Irish buy from the UK.
