Hi all,

Need a car asap as had a nightmare lately.

Long story short, golf gt tdi got wrote off last month, some clown drove straight into me. Bought another golf and had issues from start, decided to cut losses and sell fronsoares or repairs. Currently a grand + down.

Got a max budget of 700. I know it's peanuts but I've had mixed experiences with cheaper older cars, more good than bad. This will literally just be a car to put us on til hopefully the new year. If it lasts longer than its a bonus but we're hoping to buy something else in next few months.

Any suggestions? What to stay away from in terms of engine issues on older models, max mileage considered for age etc.

Looking at corsas, peugeots, fiestas, micras that kind of thing. Went to see pug 307 1.4 petrol last night. 55k on clock, near perfect Mot history but no oil in engine and I really didn't like the feel of the pedals under foot. Also absolutely filthy inside too... I know we can't be fussy with the money we've got but once bitten twice shy...

Going to look at a Honda jazz 54 plate 1.4 dsi petrol today. 120k on clock. 6 owners but only short mot (end December), FSH, spotless.

I know Honda jazz have timing chains rather than belts. Micra I had a few years ago cost me 450 and lasted me a year before timing chain started playing up (it was a "put me on car" so didn't mind parting with it) but I know timing chains on Micras tend to start playing up at around 90k miles which is what it did. Are Hondas prone to the same issues? Just a bit dubious with it having 120k on clock.

Any advice appreciated, don't want to be buying another nail to last us 3 week.

Tia

For £700, it's 100% luck. I would be looking at the usual; petrol, manual, no turbo, poverty spec, 6 months + MOT, four reasonable tyres.

eBay, Gumtree or local paper are probably the places to look.

A Jazz is good cheapo option. They don’t tend to eat timing chains if they’ve had regular oil changes so check for proof of frequent servicing. Gearbox bearings can wear out above 100k so drive it and listen for excess noise and check the gears change cleanly. Look underneath for serious rot, check the front crossmember isn’t rotten and look at the Mot history looking for structural rot. Otherwise these are tough and cheap to run. But at £700 you’re on borderline scrap money at todays prices so you’ll be lucky to find something viable that’ll pass another Mot without a load of money spending. A Jazz is one of the better chances though as they typically don’t get abused.

Well you certainly won't get anything from any sort of trader unless it is almost scrap, as your price is not far off scrap money. So anyone selling must be desperate. Private sales only, and take plenty of care. At that price the badge on the car is almost irrelevant.

Any car with 12 months MOT is going to be worth £700.

Just sold my 2003 A4 Tdi on Facebook Market Place which is the place to go. But if you are on F B put a message out that you are looking for a cheap car.

You May be surprised what results you get !

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated!

People are wanting ridiculous prices these days - 54 plate micra cost me 450 about 5 years ago, 10 month MOT and I think about 85k on clock. Sailed through its MOT then 2 month later timing chain started so cut my losses and got rid. Been seeing them advertised recently at 2k +, same age, but some kind of issue such as exhaust needing new back box, one had no exhaust at all but they wanted 1500 and exhaust thrown in for free ?? with 140k on clock and hardly no test. Baffling..

We paid 750 for last golf, absolutely fab car, had turbo recon after about 4 month of owning which cost about 500 and never had an issue with that motor. It had 240k on clock when we sadly parted ways...I'd probably still have it now if I'd not been wrote off...

I'll not even get into what happened with most recent purchase cos I'm still traumatised tbh. Was well and truly shafted with that one and now I'm at a loss.

Yeah I'm on fb, that's where we found the Honda. However guy messaged this morning to say all dashboard had stopped functioning (at least he was being honest) . Said it was a fuse problem after he spoke to garage but you never know do you so I'm unsure what to do as really don't want another problem.

Checked its MOT history and seemed to be pipes etc that corrode a lot. I'll have another look as can't remember if it said anything about structural issues. I tend to look a lot for repeat oil leaks.

Just want something to last us til after Christmas when we'll then have the money to buy something a bit better.

Jazz issues:

STRUCTURAL rust: rear wheel arches/sills, rear subframe mounting points, rear subframe can be really bad. Front sills.

Cats easily stolen

Gearbox may have noisy bearing but can run and run £400 rebuild.

EGR valves clog up - clean.

DO NOT buy an I Shift automated manual.

Thank you. What about the dashboard lights suddenly not functioning? Problem? Or just a fuse like he claims?

Fuse or 12v battery low voltage or PCB fault or.....

I would offer peanuts for a car like that. Fuses blow for a reason...

If it only has to last 5 months or so, Consider the cost of car £700 plus tax, plus insurance, and if it won't put too much strain on things, For food shopping, (if to a supermarket etc) a weekly taxi, (walk or bus if possible) Taxi home. The occasional taxi, and depending where you are, bus pass and travel card can help you save for something better.

That is,with apologies, unless you desperately need it for unsocial hours commuting and/or family reasons.

OK so I've got a Daughter who works in community care and doesn't yet drive so I've to take her on the odd "work run" then pick her back up when her shift has ended as sometimes they're way out of the way (at least 3 buses) and some colleagues refuse to pick her up as its also going out of their way to do so. Luckily she's works pretty local but they like to swap staff at last minute without asking if they can actually get there and believe me, it's really not worth facing the wrath of the office staff if she says she can't...we all want our kids to do well but if she doesn't work she doesn't get paid (0 hour contract)

Partner has hospital appointments

Son needs to get to football training /matches. And as we don't live near anyone close enough from the team to pick him up and take him for us, he can't get there.

So yes, we need a motor lol

'Bangernomics' always used to be the recommended way forward on this site, but I guess those goalposts may have moved during the last few years (if you don't recognise the term, do a site search). Your proposed course of action is essentially the same.

When I need a stop gap I always look for the old mk2 Polo.

These are so simple to sort and usually will last a bit.

Not too dear to fix either, something like this www.ebay.co.uk/itm/204413158166?mkcid=16&mkevt...Y

Avoid anything remotely specialist and buy basic mass market car - if there are failures second hand parts will be readily available and most back street garages are capable of fixing (if you can't).

For £700 anything that has:

  • a valid 6+ month Mot,
  • drives smoothly without undue noise and vibration,
  • has reasonable tyres,
  • some evidence of a service in the last year,
  • no major signs of bodywork corrosion

will be as likely as any other to provide reliable transport for a few months to two years.

How weird is that... Just been looking at polo's! That was first ever car too! Thank you!

The problem is that some of those old simple cars are getting a bit of followers from enthusiasts as well as the stop gap croud.

I'd say it's sometimes worth looking in the description if the car was already a stop gap, chances are many things were genuinly sorted.

See this example for an ex stop-gap:

Yaris ? The mark2 tough as nails ...

I was thinking of the old Suzuki Ignis. They seemed to be exclusively driven by pensioners. Not necessarily a good thing, but this one has barely moved (presumably to the MOT station) for years.
