If you drop a (non-magnetic) check valve ball, you hear it hit the tiles, and the drain is blanked off, it MUST be in the room, right?

It cannot bounce to a greater height than that from which it was dropped, and go down the sink plug hole?

I mean, conservation of energy. It’s a basic physical law

Isn’t it?

You seem to be quite good a dropping things Ed!

Guilty as charged. Seems to be a skill i’ve honed, since I didn’t lose anything the last carb strip, though I had a better workspace then. Eyesight and arthritis could also be factors. These wee parts are inherently challenging though. I reckon if Newton had worked with carb parts rather than apples, we might never have got to the moon.

Try dropping a contact lens on a sparkly vinyl floor. You need to avoid scratches so you can’t just sweep for it. My record is an hour.to find. The first thing I do is to check it’s not trapped in my clothing.

Bit late for Ed but maybe it bounced back into turn-ups or other clothing folds. Or stick in shoe sole treads?

SWMBO has an unerring ability to finds bits I've dropped, Usually exactly where I've spent ages trying to find it.

If you are describing a small spherical metal object it may be at the lowest point in your enclosed space ? :-)

Was starting to think I should just try and source a stainless steel ball bearing, (if I could find out the size) Maybe the mass is also important, but should be pretty close.

Then on the third (removing everything very carefully) pass, I FOUND IT.

Was in a (worm?) hole in the tile grouting (of the universe)

Many moons ago I also lost an accelerator pump ball valve from a carburettor I was cleaning out on my old fiat 128.

I had given it a quick blast from a nitrogen bottle hose and the nylon ball thing flew out of a hidden passage way, never to be found again.

I couldn’t find a suitable sized nylon (ish) ball to fit, so ended up driving the car for a couple of months without a working accelerator pump until a Yugo dealer ( most were based on fiat 128) managed to order me a replacement.

I feel a political symposium coming on. “Sustainability and the Planned Economy: A Comparison of Capitalist and Communist Vehicular Parts Supply Chains” I can offer a comparison of my Renault dealer, who, given make, model, year and VIN, couldn’t tell me which of umpteen braking makes and models was fitted to my Renault 5, and my Lada dealer, who, when asked for a wheel cylinder, gave me the only one they did. Might get the mods reaching for the Loctite though.

Ordinary compressed air not good enough, eh? Too good for me, which iS probably just as well. If I had compressed air available I would never get the thing back together. I use hypodermic syringes and liquids (brake fluid, water, ethanol)which I THINK clear about as well or better, but don’t project parts so far Need the screw on needles, otherwise blow dart and blinding spray

Atttempts to make a replacement tiny lost spring clip from paper lips having failed
(Look ok but I think the metal isn’t springy enough, though I suppose if it was. It might be too difficult to form) I resorted to a dental floss lashing, so now literally a lash up

That shouldn’t really be a perjorative term though. People have been trusting their lives to lashings for thousands of years...er..:Jim Lad.

The wee red plastic don’t-poke-your-eye-out pips on the hook end of standard (at least here) green wire coat hangars look purpose built for blanking off mystery vacuum ports on carburetors. Not much less losable, but more replaceable, than carb parts. I only got this running last time by blanking EVERYTHING off and then cautiously re-implementing vacuum advance ONLY, so if the car ever starts aigain that’d be what I’ll be doing. The wee red pips look much more pro than the bamboo I used last time. There are 10 of them. No wait. 11. I’ll have to buy some more coat hangars. And try not to poke my eye out.

No wait, 12
