Swiss Vignette - driving through Switzerland - Warning

Happened to be watching a YouTube video, noticed the driver had to buy a Swiss Vignette to be able to drive on Swiss motorways. It costs £45.

Is this a form of car tax for foreign on all vehicles?

Lots of European countries seem to be introducing some of sort of scheme.....

Swiss motorway vignette 2023 (ch.ch)

Just looks like it's a form of tax for all vehicles - Swiss or foreign.

The Swiss vignette has been around for many years although the price seems to have increased quite a bit. The first time we went (1991) the cost was 25 Swiss Francs (we got nearly 2.5 SFr to the pound in those days!),

I am not sure whether it was a tax intended as a direct contribution towards the upkeep of their Motorways or whether it was in lieu of motorway tolls but the cost seemed pretty reasonable in those days.

I've not driven to Switzerland since before Covid lockdowns but am planning to go this year. I usually approach from the Black Forest area of Germany and buy the Vignette over the counter at the last service station before the border at Basel to avoid queuing at the border - I hope I still can!. The cost has been gradually going up every year, mind you so has the cost of everything especially French Tolls.

It costs 40 Swiss Francs, which not too long ago would have been £20. I guess the exchange rate is not what it was. Unlike most other countries with a similar system, they only offer annual stickers, which burdens tourists more than the locals.

The last time we drove to Switzerland many years ago, entering near Basel, we were obliged to buy the motorway pass on entry, but we did manage to avoid it on another occasion by coming in from France on a minor road. IIRC we completed our holiday free of charge by careful choice of route, but I suspect that may be harder these days with ANPR and suchlike.

Don't remember this, but I last drove there in the 80's. Can't remember driving on motorways either so maybe we just avoided them.

My Swiss "vignette" (in the general OED sense of "a brief evocative description, account, or episode.") would be on the first in-country roadside pee stop, when I realised that the "rock" I was irrigating was in fact a set of very well camouflaged clamshell ferrocement doors, presumably to some kind of bunker. Zipped and bugged out sharpish.

Once I got my eye in I was surprised by the extent to which the whole pretty countryside was an armed camp, with obvious "dragons teeth" defenses around the pretty villages and much less obvious concealed defenses on the valley sides.

Contrasts rather with the situation in Taiwan (where there is a much more imminent existential threat) though I suppose fixed defenses are less effective these days.

It has to brought for a whole year and locals need to purchase it as well. Without it you are not allowed on the highways. I have seen them checked quite frequently.

"Highways" meaning their motorways and expressways. For the other roads, you do not have to pay.

We've travelled into Switzerland on several occasions while staying just over the border in France. In fact the shortest way between some places in France is through Switzerland. Kept of the Motorways and major highways and not needed a Vignette.

I thought that a Swiss Vignette was their version of a posh Ford? :-)
