Volvo xc70 - Insurance NCB - James Girdler

Hi All, hope everyone is well. So stupid question, almost too straight forward and pointless asking, just thought I'd get some advice. I've always protected my NCB, however, I've been told I shouldn't bother by a few friends and family. I only have 4 years, been driving for 4 years. Cost of living and all that, my xc70 will cost me £950 with AXA. The Skoda Octavia £1200 last year with RAC. Should have shopped around. However, if I don't protect them this time around, £537, so big saving. I put a separate quote through with no NCB and it came up £980. So should I just not bother protecting them, run the risk of not being involved in an accident and save myself £400 or so. If I make a claim, then obviously I'll be spending the same as I would be more or less if I protect them. Just wondering whether under 5 years it's worth it if it means saving 400 quid. I guess if there is an accident I could always pay up front and not claim, if they're not protected would I still have 5 years NCB next year if I don't make a claim?

Thanks all

It always depends how much of a gambler you are, and how much you can afford to risk. It adds a bit to your premium to protect a NCB (your stake). You may not claim this year, or something nasty may happen costing rather more. Then something less nasty may happen and you have to decide whether to claim, or pay for a modest repair without claiming so your premium doesn't go up next year.

At the end of the day it will depend how much you can risk, and how much you are willing to pay for peace of mind - feathering the nests of the insurers.

I never buy these optional 'add-ons' - extended warranties, protected NCBs - put the saving in your piggy-bank and use that if (IF) something happens. When it doesn't, carry it over to next year or have a night out.

I suppose we make our own choices to suit our own circs.

Personally i've always protected the policy, even though i would not make a claim under about £1000 worth of damage and instead sort it myself.

The way i look at it is this, you have major accident you get the blame which is easy enough these days even if you arn't at fault, your insurance immediately ends.

Without protecting you renew somewhere at a much higher full price, maybe twice the previous premium and start again ncd building again from scratch, so maybe £500 extra this time, £350 extra next year, £250 the year after that?, those are only figures of the top of my head, whatever i'd rather pay the extra £30/50 to protect the policy...being of advanced years our insurances are so cheap i don't think protecting the policies cost us anything at all.

Presumably you are using a comparsion site for quotes, remember some companies (NFU, Direct Line) don't feature on the usual sites, DL have their own website for auto quotes, i've been with DL a few years now and am finding no reason at all to move on.

I take a higher excess and never buy "extras" like NCB protection - keeps the premiums down and have done this for decades.

Similar with house/contents.

Car - If I had to make a claim due to my fault that is my punishment and need to be more careful in future.

Never taken it out protected NCD. Always shop around each year for best price. If you have protected NCD and you have a claim then the premium gets loaded anyway, you just get told we have given you a xx% discount on an inflated price.

From past experience when it comes to renewal always seem to get a price at least double from what I settle at.

Currently got a Porsche Boxster insured fully comp for £128 per year. Garaged, 6k miles pa, 10 years + NCD. IAM & RoSPA Gold pass, but that doesn't seem to make much difference.

"If you have protected NCD and you have a claim then the premium gets loaded anyway, you just get told we have given you a xx% discount on an inflated price."

It's surprising the number of people who don't realise that though - not on this forum of course! If someone gave me a £ for every time I've had to explain it doesn't mean your premium stays the same I could retire early...

I don't bother with protecting the car NCB. I've generally followed the self-insure method for risks where I'm prepared to tolerate the worst case scenario. So no insurance for things like domestic appliances or cat insurance, I will run the risk on those and pay when needed.
