I do a lot of city driving, probably around 50/70 mile a day and occasions I’m down to London from Scotland once/twice a week - I'm wondering whether I should go for a 2020 rav 4 hybrid or a 2021 plate 320d xDrive MHT M Sport 5dr Step Auto for best mpg - what would you guys suggest?

Cheers
Keith

My neighbour has not long bought a 2.5hybrid Rav4 auto and finds it somewhat sluggish after previously owning a 2010 diesel version.. I would think that the BMW is a much better bet. Cars are totally different SUV verses a saloon. Check the cars fuel on Autotrader for the cars you are interested in

The BMW 2.0 d was always very efficient and I think you will struggle to beat it. But reading your post I would be placing comfort and refinement above all else.

According to the Real MPG figures, you'll probably get 5-10% better MPG from the BMW. I would probably look for a non-SUV hybrid. Maybe a Toyota Camry or Lexus, or even the new Civic?

Yep looking at those as well - my head is melted looking at cars all week :/

What you could try, purely for comparison and not to get accurate figures, is look at the official 'urban' and 'extra urban' consumption figures. So, if a car has 30mpg urban and 50mpg extra urban and your week consists of 600 miles urban and 200 miles motorway you have 20 gallons for urban and 4 gallons for motorway.

That method will show you which vehicle should be most efficient for your style of driving. It won't tell you what your MPG will actually be.

Yes absolutely but my main goal is to reduce fuel cost - right now I run a 67 plate A6 Quattro I get around 47 on the motorway but around city it’s as low as 20 to 25 mpg and costing me at least 450 a month on fuel. I keep hearing the hybrids are better around town but from what I can see the 3 series is also a good bet not 100% sure on city driving though.

That’s my sticky point on the rav - more negative than positive about this suv. I just like the extra space.

Remember the potential for future city focused low emission zones. Most aren’t that diesel friendly, BMW will be EU6 but just takes a change in the rules & you have costs. Also high potential for diesel DPF regeneration issues. Crystal ball time !!

Yep - I will be doing this job for a few years at least so I need to take it into account - looking at a Tesla but my worry is the battery. I won’t have this kinda money in a wee while so need to make the right choice.

If you are doing 50/70 miles a day all in the city I'd think an EV would certainly be worth looking at as I'd think running costs would be a lot lower than a diesel or petrol when you are not getting up to much of a speed.

If your Audi is also a 2.0 diesel then the difference in economy between it and the BMW will be marginal at best.

But I'm curious as to why those two cars specifically if your priority is reducing fuel costs?

Just curious as to why you do so much driving in a city? In such an environment no car is going to be particularly economical but a hybrid will without doubt be better than most diesels and ultimately be more future proofed against possible tax changes.

Before we bought our Skoda Superb PHEV I drove a RAV4 and was pretty impressed but over a 30 mile urban/rural test the dash displayed a 38mpg which was actually less than we were getting in the same type of use with our existing Skoda Superb with a 1.4 TSi engine. We also test drove a Toyota Corolla 2 litre Hybrid and were pretty impressed with that as and over roads of a similar type and distance it actually managed 48 mpg on the dash. That car (or a similar hybrid from another manufacturer) may be your best choice unless you need the space the RAV4 offers.

Yeah I’m looking at others as well - I do need a decent sized boot as I occasionally move equipment around.

I’m just looking for a good all rounder, decent space, good mpg around the city and not too bad on long journeys.

Maybe I’m asking for too much - any recommendations?

Cheers

IMHO it has to be a hybrid hatch/estate - longevity reliability and still has value even with high miles.

Honda Civic, Toyota/Lexus hybrids are worth a look.

A friend did high miles - he always bought low mileage 1.5 - 2 year old car - put on his mileage (25/30K/year IIRC) and sold with say 60K ish on the clock. Did not suffer year 1 depreciation and sold before the mileage put off buyers.

A car that is best suited to city use is not going to be suited to travelling from Scotland to London.

You have already discovered a car that is great for the Scotland to London part (your diesel Audi) is unsuited to city use.

So why not forget driving the London Scotland bit and use the train. It will cost more short term but over the years the reduction of wear and tear on the car and depreciation could well offset that extra cost. Then you could look at getting a smaller Hybrid (presuming it would suit your other needs) which would be seriously economical in the city or even an EV.

I do a lot of city driving, probably around 50/70 mile a day....

...assuming 5 day week = c.300miles...assuming 40 full time weeks work a year = c.12,000 miles

and occasions I’m down to London from Scotland once/twice a week...

..assuming 50 return drives from Edinburgh c.800 miles return = c.40,000 mies.

Grand total more than 50,000 miles a year. Assuming 20p a mile fuel and oil costs, that's around £10,000 pounds per annum. If you can't afford a Lexus, I would stick to an economical diesel saloon with a good Cd; more economical on the motorway than an SUV.

Depreciation is a big factor here. If your Audi was new, you will have already endured huge depreciation as people usually won't pay much for a high miler, even if fairly new, so why not run it till it dies? Any actual improvement in fuel economy from a replacement presumably newer car will be more than offset by its rapid depreciation, whereas your current older Audi, if you keep it, will depreciate far more slowly.

Finally, what sort of unreconstructed 20th century job is this that requires so much socially unacceptable consumption of fossil fuel by (presumably) one person sitting for hundreds of hours a year moving a large metal box on wheels?

Obviously one where working from home is impossible? There are tens of thousands of people working like this keeping the country running. Fed up of people knocking people for their way of life particularly with the green thing if it even exists.

Like what?

...keeping the country running.

The admirable people who 'keep the country running' are doing just that - not driving for hours on end (unless they are PSV drivers).

Fed up of people knocking people for their way of life

Wasn't knocking - just asking. Might well be justified - e.g. peripatetic specialised neurosurgeon.

particularly with the green thing if it even exists.

I suggest search 'COP27'.... and hopefully learn something.

You mean how the rich and powerful fly all over the world to work out policies for the greater good. It will be interesting to see if the Davos meeting comes to the same conclusions as long as they are all making money.

Maybe look at 320i instead. Mine did an easy ave 45+mpg. With petrol round here a good 30p ltr cheaper than diesel.
