Last week my trusted independent replaced my (83000 mile) original front discs, I also asked for new wheel bearings.

All was fine for a couple of days then I noticed an odd noise when braking from 20 mph or less, frequency depending on speed, sounds like some non-metallic item is catching as the right front wheel rotates. Only occurs when braking, no vibration or pulsing pedal, brakes work smoothly.

Went back and car was put on lift, jacked up, wheel off, caliper taken off, checked, no visible obvious cause.

  1. We are at a loss to see how new bearings, pads and discs can make this noise (never had it before the replacements).

As the sound happens under braking only i'm of the opinion its brake based.

Is it a pad squealing? almost all cases of squealing in my experience have been high speed vibration of the metal backing plate of the pad against the caliper, could be where the piston contacts the pad or the edge of the pad vibrating against the caliper itself.

Do you have those nice little sprung stainless steel clips on your calipers, clipped into the caliper and the pad slotting nicely held in by that clip? i ask because i've found that over time crud builds up between the caliper and that clip, i ping them off clean the clips up with a wire brush and scrape the caliper clean where the clip sits with an old chisel or sharp screwdriver and finish off with wire brush, sometimes when you find new pads awkward to fit after cleaning up like this they slide in easily so able to retract better after the brake is released.

No doubt your indy cleaned and lubed the sliders up well during refit, another thought is the back plate (assuming one fitted) so close to the disc that under braking its catching.

Is the tyre far enough from the suspension strut, you should be able to feel that gap yourself even if unable to actually see even on full lock.

What make pads were fitted?

I wish I could agree with you but it isn`t the case, many a time I had to change a set of pads due to a problem with a new set of pads causing a noise that the others were not making, and even though everything had been done properly everyone disagreed with what I reckoned.

on changing a set for the same make of pad discovered one pad was making a noise as it wasn`t happening after the change, I have done enough to know it does happen even though its rarer now than years ago.

GB, many thanks for that, I suspect you have hit on the cause, a thorough clean and lube of caliper and clips may be needed, I will arrange that when my indy has a time free, they said to call back if it persisted.

I have known the owner for over 40 years, he always did that but had to retire after a heart attack so his brother and nephew now do the repairs and servicing,.

They are very busy, two of them working for all the regular customers they had when there were three mechanics.

It was minus 4 C here this morning and not much more in my garage, so don't feel like a DIY attempt!

Wish i lived a little closer old friend, we've soon bash that little lot out between us, cold or not.

Considering the hilly area you live in those discs have lasted well.

A generous thought, appreciated, I try not to use brakes more than necessary, momentum conservation is the aim, as you have pointed out.
