I was thinking for a long time to buy a Qashqai as a family car, but having read little bit on the Internet, Q's get a really bad rep...

Here's the precedents: it has to be a SUV, I'm 6ft6 and 120kg with wide shoulders, we're in zone 2 in London and won't be doing many miles a year, maybe 1000 or so, if that. I don't mind it being dull, I just need to be comfy in it. It will definitely be a second hand, auto gear box, preferably petrol with Euro 6 (because ulez). Not too strict on budget, I'd be looning for up to 14k, but if it's worth it I might stretch to 17k or so.

I've tried the Karoq and it felt narrow on the shoulders, and also the Tiguan which felt a bit larger that the Q, but I've found the latter a bit overpriced.

Do you have any recommendations that fit the criteria?

What does your 1000 miles look like? 20 miles every week or 500 miles twice a year?
In either instance I don’t think I’d be putting that much money into a currently over priced and depreciating asset.
It’d be taxis and the occasional hire car for me, especially with a decent public transport infrastructure in place.

Our son lives in Zone 2, and doesn't own a car. If only driving 1000 miles a year, the pence per mile cost of ownership, tax, insurance, fuel and maintenance will be astronomical - unless the owner is a canny car dealer able to service it themself.

I used to live in Zone 2 and have four cars. Kept me busy.....

It's mostly 20 miles per week, with the occasional 200 miles maybe 4 times per year. I have a small kid so I will need to keep a baby chair in there, maybe a buggy etc. So I want to have an asset that I can actually take and go, with some personal stuff kept in it too.

I have considered just renting and taxis, yes, it will come cheaper but much much less convenient.

The slight problem you have is that most automatics now are DCT and are not at all suited to plodding around in London traffic.

The Jeep Renegade has a lot of headroom and is pretty wide. Possibly too short for a buggy though. You need to avoid the DDCT. A lot of Citroens have flat, wide seats that might work.

An EV or PHEV would be ideal for your situation. A Kia Soul might suit?

Have you looked at a Toyota RAV4 Hybrid?

Might be worth looking at a Honda CR-V. The 2 litre petrol auto in the price range you mention will be a standard torque converter, and is likely to give you trouble-free service. You could probably get a Mk4 facelift at that price.
