Iveco daily 2017 dual rear wheel- Balancing rear wheels on double wheel van - AlexT

I changed the tyres at a tyre shop last week for the work van and usually they balance all 6 wheels ( dual rear wheel lorry) but this shop said you only balance the front ones, and he removed the weights from the rear wheels and put them on unbalanced. I find it strange, every other tyre shop seams to balance all of them. I asked him about it and he said he knows better, that you only balance the rear ones in normal vans, that have 4 wheels.

Anyone have any experience with this? I searched the forum but couldn't find any topic already opened.

You need to go back to the other tyre shop.

Never heard that one before and I used to change tyres and balance wheels, four unbalanced wheels on the rear could cause damage to bearings and severe vibration through the body, I`d take it back as there is a reason why the balance weights were there in the first place.....

There are two schools of thought on this, and I don't think either is definitely 'right".

You may be right.

I gather where the garage have no wheel adapter cone for machine to mount the wheels they fit balance weights to make it look like they have balanced the wheels or say they can`t be balanced/don`t need it.. but can`t be sure about that, and as a lot are fairly quick on the road speed wise its a good idea to do them

Or put it this way, I see no reason why they shouldn`t be balanced imo...

Went back to the tire shop where I changed them before (not the same one as the one in the first post) and they put the balancing weights, and the guy that puts them on no longer works there. They said it's not necessary, just a waste of money and time, as long as the front ones are balanced the rear ones don't matter in the case of dual rear wheels. They basically refused to take my money and balance them.

Can't see any logic in this. It's unlikely to find any plain wheel accurately in balance, and there's no point in fitting an unbalanced wheel if it can be corrected. Especially if wheels are paired - there may be a lucky orientation where the imbalances can cancel each other, but equally they could reinforce.

That fitter must be talking nonsense.

Agreed . Or is just too lazy to go to the trouble of doing the necessary work.

The logic behind it is, apparently:

- On lorries, there can be so many wheels to balance that it becomes very time-consuming.

- Because the wheels and the load are that much heavier, there is little point messing around with a few grams.

- Given the lack of refinement, most drivers won't notice the difference.

So, it is not considered essential to balance them. Frankly, I would ask them to.

Given the speed at which most trucks travel on the M'way (somewhere near the speed at which an out-of-balance wheel is noticeable on a car) I wonder if miles of continuous oscillation might lead to a blowout ?

The OP's van is an Iveco Daily, I'd think he'd notice badly out of balance rears, especially when empty or with a light load.

Tyres might wear unevenly in time.

Is there perhaps some confused thinking that they should be dynamically balanced as a pair, because that is how they operate on the vehicle?

I'd guess they can't in fact be balanced as a pair, because they wont fit on the machine like that, hence the conclusion that they can't/shouldn't be balanced?

I don't think they should need to be dynamically balanced as a pair. If they balance individually, the assembled pair should also balance.

If this belief/practice is widespread, it suggests its possible in practice to "get away with it", even though not ideal.

I don't find this hugely surprising since I used to fit my own car tyres (remoulds) in The Yook, without balancing, and wasn't aware of any issues.

If you drove the sort of car then as you do now (Skywing), I would've thought wheel balance was the least of your worries.

That's pretty much what I just said.

The car I had longest, though, and hence put most tyres on, was a Renault 5 Campus I got from my mother when she stopped driving.

Quite a nice little car, by far the most expensive (non-company) car I've had, dealer maintained from new, allegedly (Of course it never saw the dealer again, and since it had a mismatched set of spark plugs when I got it I wasn't uber impressed with the dealer servicing), quite respectable.

It didn't seem to mind unbalanced tyres either.

It did, however, mind its cooling fan failing and melting down the wiring loom, which it did just after I put a new exhaust on it.

I dithered about re-wiring it, and eventually it got towed away.

That ls my "newer/more reliable" car experience, and it probably contributes to my limited belief in the concept.
