Hi all -

I took my car in for a service and 2 new brake discs. The next morning I picked it up and left a trail of oil for half a mile before the garage runf me and said they spotted oil where my car had been parked.
On its return, the garage said it was the rocker box seal and they had to order it from Germany as there were none available in the UK.
3 weeks later, the part arrives and I'm told a fuel line was also leaking and they spotted this only now. Again, part ordered... one more week and they say it's ready. They road test it and ring me again to say the head gasket has now blown and it will cost £2000.
They then say, they are happy to buy the car for £2000 less than Autotrader prices.
I've told them I need a day or two to think.
I'm not sure if I'm being scammed or just the victim of an unfortunate string of events...
???????Many thanks in advance.

If your car had no oil leaks before this 'service', I would assume those leaks were caused by them. Perhaps for some error like changing oil without replacing the drain plug. Was the oil changed ? I can't easily think of any other service item which might cause an oil leak, nor why the gasket should suddenly blow. Looks to me as if they are clutching at any possible straw excuse.

Some hard talking is called for, if necessary with legal back-up.

Thank you Andy.

Oil was changed. They told me the rocker box seal was damaged and oil was already leaking when they opened it up. Though, there was not a single drip of oil from my car before. When I picked it up, it was streaming out the bottom of my car and that's when they said it was the rocker box seal. Very suspicious.

Was the work carried out at the main dealer ?

Merc C220d coupe '63 plate, 55,000 miles - In for service 1 month ago, at the garage still... - James Gordon

At an independent garage. Unfortunately there is only one main dealer for Mercedes here in Jersey and it's booked very far in advacnce

Reading this at face value, I can't think of any car where an oil change requires opening the rocker-box - but that may not be what was meant. To me there seems no valid route to a serious oil leak other than careless servicing. The offer to buy your car suggests that they think they may have done serious damage and would rather buy you off.

They should put your car back in the condition in which they received it. If that is expensive, tough !

I find it hard to believe that a 21st century car with fewer than 60k miles should be leaving even one drop of oil on the garage floor after a long journey. Even if the seal was faulty, it could not leak so badly as to 'leave a trail of oil'.

I used to have a Nissan Micra that went in for a service and came back with an oil leak. I thought it was the rocker cover gasket but took it back to the garage where it was serviced. They had a look and fairly quickly realised that they had left either the plug or some sort of bolt out. They put it back, refilled the oil and off I went.

In short, I think your garage is probably telling fibs. They either did a similar thing or possibly didn't screw the oil filter back on properly (if they changed it). Did you have high fuel consumption before it went in (fuel line)? Did you have any symptoms of HGF, such as white smoke, boiling coolant or mayo under the oil filler?

I should add, I have had a rocker cover gasket go on another car and you don't get a stream of oil. You get a light misting in the engine bay and a very gradual loss. Prior to getting it fixed, I gave my car a weekly top up of around 100ml.

My rocker cover gasket has been leaking for about 3 years. I'll get around to it. You can bet if it was leaking a lot of oil I already would have.

The obvious interpretations seem to be

(a) Error and cover up

Stream of oil sounds like loose drain plug or oil filter. Loose/missing filler cap COULD lose a lot of oil (seems to vary between engines) but that'd oil your engine bay.

(b) Deliberate sabotage, with a view to a "bargain buy

(b) Seems a bit too blatant, plus I don't see how they couild contrive a stream of oil without potentially damaging their purchase or leaving evidence,

(I suppose you might not have noticed, say, a condom formerly full of oil on the underrtray?)

But I have very little experience of garaqes,

Oil was changed. They told me the rocker box seal was damaged and oil was already leaking when they opened it up.

Thinking about it a bit more, the explanation that might best fit the facts is that the oil was drained, plug refitted (so no immediate puddle on refilling), but filter not tightened - or not fitted at all. Hence the performance when engine was restarted. Any other explanation is extremely unlikely IMHO.

AFAIK, MB are one manufacturer that do not use drain plugs on their engines. When I researched using a vacuum system for doing oil changes, this was confirmed on this Forum. This may be incorrect. ( I do not own a MB ). I agree it is likely that the filter was not fitted correctly during the service.....

All MB models have an engine oil sump drain plug, but not all have a dipstick tube .

Like some VW Group engines - perversely my 3.0 TDi VW has an unused dipstick tube, but no dipstick - electronic level gauges are great until they fail.

Making yourself a dipstick would not necessarily involve too much rocket surgery.

If its a straight stick you can use a meat thermometer (gives you oil temperature).

I use a magnetic pickup tool.

A LOT more rational and informative than a magnetic drain plug, but never an OEM fitment AFAIK
