Hi The EML is on in my i10 . Had it diagnosed at the garage (not main dealer) & was quoted 670£ for a new timing chain Inc of parts & labour I realise this is a labour intensive job , but 670£ does seem really expensive Is this a fair price or should I “shop around “ & try finding someone slightly cheaper?
Thank you!

I would be careful before parting with any money. A friend's wife has exactly the same car and year and had the EML come on and was quoted some stupid price (by a main dealer I think) for a new chain and even then they couldn't guarantee it would resolve it. They took it elsewhere and it turned out to be a sensor somewhere which resolved it at a fraction of the price. I will try and find out what the sensor was.

My friend has replied and says: "Actually they removed the rocker cover, tested the sensor, it was ok, traced the wiring and replaced a faulty wire. Re-tested, no return of EMS dash warning light. Simple as that."

Thank you for that advice Xileno! What would you suggest I should do? Shop around for a quote on a timing chain replacement or just get them to re diagnose? I feel I’m usually at their mercy & finding a good honest garage is so difficult sometimes
Thanks

Ask them to remove the rocker cover and check the wiring.

You need to establish what fault codes are logged . If there are any related to camshaft/ crankshaft synchronisation or timing correlation, then chances are the chain is in trouble. There’s no wiring in the rocker cover , it’s all external to the engine.

Did anyone say there was wiring in the rocker cover ? Twould be a funny place to find any :-)

My badly-written post suggests there is wiring under the rocker cover.

Best to take no notice of what I write ;-)

The P0011 code may be related to the variable camshaft adjuster system , rather than the chain . Have you checked the oil level , and how long ago was it changed?
Hyundai i10 1.2 Classic 2011 - Timing chain replacement costs? - nomorebills
Hi yes the oil levels are good The guy I bought it from said 10,000 miles ago but had no receipts etc I don’t believe him anyway
Thanks

When did you buy it and was it from a trader? Sounds like a problem car.

Hi Thanks for the link . Unfortunately i bought it privately, although i am certain the guy who sold it was/is a trader selling from home. There were few other cars parked outside his house.,which i probably should have twigged I am now faced with 3 choices . Get it fixed. Sell it for like 7-,800£ , and cut my losses or drive it till it dies.. Decisions decisions.

Well, it sounds like a car with a problem, not necessarily the same thing.

Trader-posing-as-punter, as suggested by the OP, is not good circumstantially, but is not specific evidence against the car.
