Atm I am stopping the car in 2nd gear and it seems to have stopped the grinding.
Any ideas?
Ok, so you've "fixed" it.
Don't have much relevant experience, since I nearly always stop in neutral, to avoid reverse-loading the transmission.
I reckon stopping is what brakes are good at, until they break.
The involvement of engine braking suggests this might be a transmission issue rather than a braking issue, though probably still a breaking issue.
If your garage (after of course selling you some stuff that you might or might not have needed), were looking for brake brokeness they might have been looking in the wrong place.
For example, could be a gearbox bearing, driveshaft bearing, wheel bearing or CV joint that is breaking a bit. CV joint is perhaps most likely, but in that case it would be expected to click some on full lock.
I might jack it up and spin the wheel, trying to feel for bearing roughness and looking for wheel wobble/excessive runout, which would be suggestive of wheel bearing failure, assuming your garage cleaned things up enough that the wheel is sitting true. A failing wheel bearing might get quite hot, and an IR thermometer might give you some clue.
Stopping in first gear will impose the greatest load on the transmission, which might be why its currently OK in second. If this is correct and it breaks a bit more, you might find you have to successively go to third, fourth, etc to avoid the symptoms, or you could skip the intermediate gears and just stop using engine braking.
If this is correct it'll probably eventually start to give problems on acceleration too, and then would need fixed.
