Was at a main dealer in Surrey last week near Guilford. As I parked my car a parts delivery arrived from EuroCarParts - so much for genuine used parts being used on customers cars. Cusotomers are charged a premium from Euro Car prts delivered products. - Sharp practice (IMHO). Dealership was owned by Inch****ape and sells a lot of hybrid cars from Japan.

Main dealers offer non-manufacturer servicing on older or non-franchise vehicles. It’s not unusual to see Euro car parts vans delivering to them or other firms.

Not sure what you think this proves?. A Toyota dealer (for example) is going to be taking other makes in as trade-ins. These cars, apart from not being Toyota's, may also not be in the first flush of youth. If they were to take a 6 year old Ford Kuga in against a RAV4, which was then retailed on their premises, would you expect them to use genuine Ford parts?.

For run of the mill consumables such as brake pads, dealers may offer a choice of OEM, or alternative brand makes. I also doubt any manufacturers have their own wiper blades etc.

Without finding out just what was delivered, I don't know what valid conclusions you might draw.

A master cylinder for my old Volvo V40 was pretty expensive from Volvo. A pupil of mine was a mechanic and put in a cylinder from one of someone like Euro parts for a fraction of the cost. Apparently the 'genuine' part was made in the UK, shipped out to Sweden for packaging then sold as a genuine Volvo part for the inflated price.

Many parts for my A2 were no longer available from Audi.

Same thing for my A4 compressor, which I had rebuilt. The production run for some parts for models like my A4 was three months and parts were sourced after a bidding process, same as tyres for new cars.

Ive heard Lexus have reputation for the most expensive parts but perhaps very few are needed !

Many years ago the company I worked for were discontinuing making fan drives - we offered our runout stocks to the local Volvo dealer who snapped them up as Volvo charged him three times what we sold them to Volvo for.

This kind of mark-up was then common and probably still is, so it isn't the dealer who makes a huge profit on OE parts.

To be fair, 'non-genuine' parts don't necessarily mean rubbish or illegal knock-offs. They can mean high quality equivalent or pattern parts from decent firms, like Bosch or suchlike.

My local Mazda dealer has often offered such parts when there have been delays on parts from Mazda Europe's Belgian central store. They always tell me which make they are and the difference in price.

I suspect that sooner rather than later the 'genuine' parts for my 16yo Mazda3 will be in shorter supply because we're well outside the last manufacture date (2009) + 10 years for the car. I've already noticed that many of the accessories are no longer available, including some wheels. Someone gotta pick up the trade...

Had the cam belt on my 2013 Berlingo replaced by the (newly appointed) Citroen franchise for the town. Well known national name selling Vauxhall from the same site.

Was specifically offered two prices. One, more expensive, with Citroen parts another with generic parts. Observed to the service receptionist that I was surprised to find such a deal in a franchise site. She explained it was standard process for older vehicles as many owners were unwilling/unable to pay full price.

Cannot see any sense in getting an older car repaired by a franchise dealer, surely the labour charges would be far higher than your independent and parts the same price if using generic.

ECP sell branded products too like Denso, Bosch, Aisen. These companies all make OEM parts, so I wouldn’t be too concerned about the dealership.

Not always - quite a lot of main dealers charge very reasonably now as they are competing against the independents and can have lower costs sometimes...no doubt it's like a supermarket - they can buy parts in bulk to get better rates so they can charge the same as the independent and their lower labour rates.

Indeed - when my car needed a new clutch back in 2016, the difference in price between my local main dealer (OEM parts) and an indie (Bosch generic parts) in the next town (where I was working at the time) was £20. I didn't really know much about the quality of the indie so I stayed with my dealership.

I have similar problems locally as there's not enough trustworthy reviews for local indies for me to have my car serviced at one - they certainly are cheaper on that front, but as you say, not quite as much as you'd think.

The other benefit of using a main dealer for replacement parts is that they often guarantee them for much longer - mine does a 3yr guarantee except for things like clutches.

>>I suspect that sooner rather than later the 'genuine' parts for my 16yo Mazda3 will be in shorter supply

My 16 year old Xedos gave me very few issues in my 15.5 year ownership.

What did cause me grief latterly were perished bushes & brake callipers - my Indie had fitted 2 genuine Mazda parts. Needed a 3rd -they had become unavailable as new from Mazda and the alternative was refurbished - the price of the refurbs was 50% HIGHER than new ones had been !

Market forces I suppose - 50% dearer and my old one would be re-cycled back to some small workshop somewhere.
