Like most people I want to maximise mpg. Need to get 2 new front tyres. There is no evidence of uneven wear or signs when steering.

Is it worthwhile to get 4 wheel alignment ? Will it improve mpg ? With a ten year old car could it damage anything involved with the wheels ?

Sorry it's a stupid question but I don't know much about technical side.

Personally I would not bother unless I had a feeling something wasn't quite right with the way the car drove or there was evidence of uneven tyre wear. I cannot see why the fuel economy would improve unless there was a problem to start with.

Thanks for the prompt, helpful and clear reply.

I had been leaning that way but I need this top quality forum to comment before deciding.

If both front tyres have worn evenly across the tread (easy to tell with the Tread Wear Indicators), then I'd leave well alone. The cowboys operating some of this equipment haven't a clue and are quite likely to mess it up, unless you're prepared to pay a premium for a full, four wheel alignment check.

Standard story is best-tyres-ont-back, so if following that you need to move your backs to the front first.

But perhaps thats what you meant.

Tracking and wheel alignment are not an expensive job, but are unlikely to affect mpg unless something is seriously amiss - which it doesn't appear to be. Probably fitting two new tyres would make more difference, possibly even worsening mpg marginally as the rubber will be softer.

However correcting any small tracking errors can only be a good idea and might improve the driving experience.

Thanks both, adding to my knowledge.
