Replacement for a Nissan Note - Zippy123
We purchased SWMBO’s Nissan Note as a pre-reg in March 16 (a down size from a Touran). The car cost £10k and I think inflation will add at least £5k to a modern equivalent. (So looking to spend about £15k maximum).

It’s now feeling a little old though only 20k miles, it’s time to change it whist it’s still worth about £5k.

For a small car it’s well specified and roomy. The sliding rear bench is a good idea as well.

What would the forum recommend for a replacement about the same size and practicality?

It has to be a Honda Jazz - £15K will not get you a new one but there are loads of the older petrol models.

The 1.3 is asthmatic, like you Note, but there is the 1.5 Sport which is a tad faster. Irrespective of which model you buy it should be reliable

I agree with the Honda Jazz replacement but I would try and find the extra cash to get the current model, it’s a far more superior car and driving experience compared with the old model.

The old model isn’t a bad experience, but the current model Jazz is a brilliant car and would top my list every time; the fuel efficiency of the hybrid engine is stunning.

Totally disagree that the Jazz's 1.3 is asthmatic (having owned one for three years). May not be particularly powerful and there may well be a distinct lack of torque, but it does love to rev which is the polar opposite of (an engine) being asthmatic.

Be aware that as spacious and practical as the Jazz is, it does not have a sliding rear seat. What you do have is a rear seat base which flips up against the rear seat back rest to create a 2nd spacious load area. EX trim is top of the range and has such niceties as power fold mirrors, cruise, and climate.

As an alternative, (assuming manual gearbox) I'd suggest a Skoda Fabia estate with the 110bhp version of the excellent 1.0TSI engine. Huge boot, decently spacious cabin, good performance and economy, and reliable.

You could also consider a small SUV/Crossover like the SEAT Arena, same engine as the Fabia above and again assuming manual gearbox (so no DSG!).

You could also get into a brand new Dacia for that budget, either a high spec Sandero or a lower spec Duster (and of course you could get a nearly new high spec Duster).

BTW, cheapest current Jazz starts off at about £17k, so not too far above current budget. Auto only though.

>>BTW, cheapest current Jazz starts off at about £17k,

Base Jazz is £19K and offers from brokers are as rare as rocking horse sh+t - discounts were possible a few months back but in the last 2 months these offers seem to have dried up.

£15k doesn’t go far new these days while we’re allowing our government to inflate its way past the national debt and the cost of the Covid furlough program so unless you want a basic Fiesta or Corsa it’s used only. A Mazda 2 or a CX3 would be my front runners here. Utterly reliable, reasonably practical and vastly superior to drive than a Jazz.

I just found a great car on Auto Trader:

Driver's seat looks a bit worn on the edge, unless it's just the photo. It looks like it's creased, maybe possible to adjust.

Looks like it's been well prepared (and cared for) .

Mazdas are nicer to drive enthusiastically but about as much suspension travel as a shopping trolly..

They’re firm but I wouldn’t say uncomfortable. I’ve never driven a Mazda I thought was overly harsh.

Have to disagree again here. The 1st and 2nd gen Jazz might not have handled with any brio, but the third gen (which the OP's budget would be applicable to), is a different kettle of fish. Its ability to entertain on twisty Aberdeenshire country roads was a constant source of pleasure and amusement for me. First car we'd had for years where I'd deliberately take a quieter route to where I was going (if one was available) just for the entertainment factor. The motoring press in general (but not HJ) criticised the ride as being harsh, but I didn't find it a problem. Very 'pointy' front end and able to carry much more speed through a corner than you'd expect, its behaviour was very much at odds with the OAP image!.

I may not have driven a current shape Mazda 2 or CX3, but having experienced how much fun a (3rd gen) Jazz is, I find it difficult to accept that either is "vastly superior to drive".

But ignoring that, given the OP makes particular mention of space and practicality (but none of driving pleasure or handling), surely the Jazz is much closer to what the OP is actually looking for?. Neither Mazda is particularly spacious in the rear (unlike a Note or Jazz) and both have less boot capacity than the Jazz (by over 100 litres in the case of the 2).

I was looking at used prices, not new. The one at just under £17k was a 2021, 3k mile car.

If the OP can up the budget a wee bit, another possibility jumped into my head!. Looking on Autotrader, I see you can get a brand new SX4 S-Cross with the 1.4 Boosterjet (mild hybrid) from £16,784. This surprised me as for some reason I thought they had been discontinued in the UK. Of course there aren't a huge amount of Suzuki dealers in this country, so even assuming you could stretch the budget that far, the appeal would be diminished if your nearest dealer was 100 miles away (or if you though the car hideous!).

Spot on BBD!

I was looking at one of these for myself last year (non hybrid) for about £15k new (run out models being discounted) but couldn't get an automatic one so went for a Tucson DCT instead for £20k - still a good deal.

I will put it on the short list.

I’ll agree that the Mk III is a much better car to drive than the previous gen models but I personally wouldn’t rate it as any sort of drivers car, it certainly doesn’t match the likes of the Mazda 2 or Suzuki Swift for driver enjoyment. That said, everyone has different tastes.

Another vote here for the Jazz. It's incredibly roomy for such a small car and those magic seats are - er magic.

Replacement for a Nissan Note - VengaPete

Late model Kia Venga or Hyundai ix20. Basically the same car with a different interior. the ix20 rides softer if that's a factor to consider. Similar size to a Note.

Super reliable in pretty much all engines and gearboxes. High driving position a bit like the Note.

Wheel at each corner so inside space is surprisingly big

Yes they are no longer current but your money would get you into a run out model with all the toys and remainder of a 5 or 7 year warranty

The only downside is the autos are a bit thirsty so if you fancied going auto , be prepared for low 30's around town.
