I passed my test long before 1977.
My Dad has never actually passed his test in a car, he took it in a truck. You could do this at the time (he was born in '46 so I'm guessing this would have ben '63 or '64) and it covered you for a car too!.
I've declined Lutons on several occasions in the eighties; what use are they except for lightweight bulk stuff?
Much easier with a Transit or Renault with a sliding door.
Not necessarily, the bodywork of a luton van is usually lightweight aluminium. So the payload could be higher for a 3.5 tonne luton than a normal (all steel body) 3.5 tonne van. The extra space is very welcome for something like a house move. Through experience, the only thing I'd make sure is that the van was front wheel drive and therefore had a low floor (which wouldn't have been the case in the 80's). Also, not sure but I think some modern luton vans have opening side doors too (hinged).
