What could this knocking sound be? - DannyJ1

I picked up a car a month back. It is a 66 plate Polo GTI and has covered 42k miles. It has been upgraded and lowered with Bilsteins by the previous owner.

At first, I don't think this was happening, but over the last week, I have noticed a knocking sound which I think may be coming from the front. It happens at low speeds, and when steering (possibly WORSE in this case), both forward and in reverse, and also happens on flat/smooth roads (no speed bumps/potholes). Also noticeable idle (clutch depressed, rolling slow into junctions)

It is quite consistent and not too intermittent once it starts and something tells me it may be worse the warmer the weather.

Any ideas? Clip of the noise below, skip to 15 seconds and listen as the idicator cancels seconds later...

Suspension bushes.

Which ones? Anti roll bar favourite.

Or loose exhaust.?

As it has been lowered , could be utter incompetence by whomever fitted it.

Agree, would be best take to garage, we could be guessing all day not seeing it and as modified ?

Something us telling me that it is a rotational item maybe? The knocking happens even at a really low speed and on good roads (no calming measures/holes) as I'm easing forward. Esentially while the suspension is not under any strain. Could something like this be bearings or a cv joint?

I wouldn't expect those things to wear at that age and mileage, tho perhaps the lowering may have altered the CV joint a bit. Both of those would tend to get noisy while steering rather than straight ahead IMHO ? It's not another loose wheel is it ? :-)

Car supermarket last week replaced the rear wheel bearings after I took it back, they were absolutely howling from 35mph onwards. Also cleaned up rear brakes which (OS) were binding slightly.

...so I wouldn't want to rule them (the front) out.

I have this niggling though in the back of my mind that the last owner may have been using the car for racing or track days.

Think I'll get it to a garage this week if I can, or the dealer. Problem is I've a 200 mile drive next Sunday so kind of need the car atm.

Would hardly have lowered it and added Bilsteins to go shopping or church so your niggling thought is probably correct.

Check the anti roll bar drop links for signs of any play at all. You'll be amazed at how even the slightest play in them will amplify and sound awful, so check them thoroughly by giving them a good firm push and pull.
