Ford Transit - Family Insurance on a Minibus in Ireland ! - Liana Egan

HELP - this is a urgent question. My daughter lives in England and has 7 children with baby number 8 on the way. She drives a minibus in the UK - simply to take the kids to school. She is part-time employed as a home worker/internet business. She is looking to buy a house in Ireland and has already found her next home. She is meant to move there in May and will use a green card from her existing UK insurer that will cover her for the 1st month. She is happy to comply with all the rules and change to Irish reg plates and even retake her driving test for minibus use if this helps. BUT....can she find anyone to insure her for social & domestic use in the Republic of Ireland? NO - not one single company. My daughter can surely not be the only woman in the whole of Ireland who has a big family and drives a minibus for non commercial reasons. Has anyone got any ideas how to solve this at all - otherwise she will need to pull out of the house sale :-(

If she has actually spoke to every insurance provider in Ireland and not a single one will cover her then it looks like its impossible for her to get insurance.

If that is the case has she looked at alternative vehicles to a minibus?

Have you/she tried going through a broker?

Probably needs to contact an Insurance Broker in the Republic of Ireland.

Not a Price Comparison Site, but an Insurance Broker.

I'm not so sure about that. She may find that when she tells them she is to be resident abroad they terminate the policy from the date she leaves the UK. The green card is intended for temporary visits to overseas countries. She needs to check with her insurer - failing to update them with pertinent information about changes in circumstances may invalidate the policy.

Is it just because it’s a bus or might it be because she is not yet resident in Ireland and the vehicle is not registered there either? Call centre type insurers can’t cope with off script requirements like this.

I agree she needs to consult a local broker.

Other than that she might ask her current insurer if they have an Irish branch or partner who can assist.

Hi Liana

I am pretty much having the same kind of problem.

I am currently insured with Liberty through MIG for a Toyota Avensis. I have 7 children and 6 here in Ireland

I paid a deposit to a car today knowing that I should get the insurance. However when I phoned MIG, they came back with a rejected as there are too many seats for the new policy. They kept asking me if I was using it as a taxi, YES, Dads Taxi but NO to a normal taxi. lol

I am going to write them an email with a statement of fact that Yes, I have Child Benefit here, Yes, I have 7 Children, their Schools etc. I know this might not be necessary but I am so desperate that my family have been in Lockdown since last year. They don't really go out, we have been to the beach once when the restrictions eased but I had to make 2 trips in my Avensis.

This is a really good opportunity for me and my family to enjoy the Irish coastline, I just hope they can insure me. My wife doesn't drive so its not like I can just get another car :(

How did things turn out with your daughter?

Paul
