Hello

Can anyone offer any advice on the following please?

I have a 2005 Ford Focus MK2 with rainwater leaking into the passenger side footwell.

If I pour water on the corner of passenger side of the front windscreen the water will make its way to the passenger footwell.

It looks like it makes it’s way down the A pillar and into the sill.

It then enters the footwell via a hole in the inner sill.

Has anyone got any ideas of where the best place to start would be to locate where the water is getting in?

Any help appreciated.

You're sure it isn't getting in from the scuttle (along below the screen) which may have a blocked drain ?

That’s my thinking also . Remove the wipers and plastic trims at the base of the windscreen and check drainage holes . If they are all clear , then there may be a body seam where the sealant has failed . Shouldn’t be too difficult to clean and prepare the surface and re silicon.

Thank you both for your replies.

I am unsure where the water is first getting in but I know it enters the car from inside the sill.

I will remove the wipers and the plastic panels and locate the drainages holes to check them and also check the seam sealant.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello

Thanks again for your replies.

I removed the wipers, scuttle panel and the second plastic panel today.

All drains are clear and working and all seam sealant is in tact.

By pouring water into different areas I was able to work out that it only leaks into the footwell when I pour the water into the wing section below the bonnet hinge directly below the bottom corner of the windscreen.

Pouring water into the engine bay bulkhead area drains as expected.

I can't get any access from the engine bay so I am wondering if removing the plastic inner wheel arch would be of any use in locating the problem.

Many thanks.

Worth giving all this a read. Lots of possibilities listed here, unfortunately the owner never came back with an update.

Good grief, that reminds me of my 1969 Triumph 1300, which collected water in its nearside sill. Only difference was [a] it collected there until I could hear it sloshing when I braked, and [b] the car was only 3 years old, not 15. I could let the water out by removing a handy grommet.

I might guess that water thrown up from the wheels gets in near the top of the wing somewhere, so removing the arch-liner may enable you to trace the problem. You may be unable to avoid damaging the retaining studs though. If this is a long-standing problem, I wonder how long those sills may be worth protecting at 15 years of age.

Thanks very much for your reply.

Be handy if the Ford had the same grommet as the old Triumph.

I don't think the water is coming from the wheels as the issue also occurs when the car is standing on the drive.

Might as well take the arch-liner off just in case I can see anything. Might buy some replacement retaining studs though.

Thanks again.

There are usually a few torx screws and a few plastic push in studs . If you use the correct trim tool , they should come out ok so they can be re-used .

Thanks for your reply.

I have some trim tools so hopefully they will come out without breaking.

Thanks again for your help.

Might that wing have been off and replaced following damage, do you know ? Front wings are often bolt-on, with mastic sealant which may have been carelessly applied ?

Hello

Thanks for your reply.

It does not look like it has but of course it may have been but I don't have the full history.
