Good afternoon all.

Having recently separated from my wife I'm thinking of getting myself a new car. Most will know I had a 10 yet old Suzuki sx4 that I've owned from new and it's been an excellent car never letting me down.

I left that car with my wife as it's cheaper to run and insure so not to cost her to much to run.

In the near future I'm thinking of getting myself a luxo barge up to £20k. I was looking at the Hyundai Genesis 2015 19000 mike's on the clock all the luxuries one could want. Only thing putting me off is rearity and the 3.8 V6. I would consider a log conversation. But another part of me thinks get something like a Skoda superb or Peugeot 508 estate.

What do backroomers think

Hyundai Genesis - Cheap luxo barg - badbusdriver

The Skoda Superb is clearly the more sensible choice (not sure I'd say the same of the Peugeot). But, I have to say, I'd also be very much swayed by the big Hyundai!. I've no doubt it would be reliable, but if anything did go wrong, expect eye watering prices!. It is probably unlikely that dealers will hold parts for it in stock, so even a service might need to be planned in advance.

I'm also a fan of Hyundai's earlier 'luxury' efforts, the XG30 and Grandeur, but then I could be considered a bit odd!

That's the thing BBD I do like a odd left field choice that's what I like about it my head still tells me Skoda, but I do like the Peugeot even though my own feelings for French cars tell me no I just like the fact it's not to common.

You could just about get into a Kia Stinger for your budget. Just the ticket for a young ( middle aged? ) man about town. Left fieldy too, and allegedly rather a fun thing.

Didn't think of the stinger. Not middle aged yet still mid 30s. I do need room for the kids and occasional luggage. I don't see the appeal in something you see 10 of on every drive. My main requirements for a car are reliability and comfort above anything else.

Hyundai Genesis - Cheap luxo barg - badbusdriver

The Stinger does seem to be well liked, but I'm not sure it would be classed as a 'luxo barg', more overtly sporting than the Genesis. But the 3.3 turbo seems to kick off around £22k if you were interested (2.0 turbo petrol and 2.2 turbo diesel also available from around £20k).

As I said, I do like the Genesis, and I'm assuming you are aware of the likely mpg and road tax cost. But I'd just be a bit concerned about service pricing, and even whether or not a 'normal' Hyundai dealer would be able to?. Ultimately, if I were in your position, I think I'd be more likely to go for a big Lexus hybrid saloon. Not as rare as the big Hyundai, but not that common compared to the usual suspects of Audi, BMW and Merc.

Interesting choice but it’s not what I’d buy. Crippling depreciation, 25mpg economy and £580 a year road tax not to mention rarity of parts as most even service items will be dealer only and most will need to be ordered in. I’d look for something more mainstream like a Mazda 6 2.0 Skyactiv petrol or a late Honda Accord. Both offer comfort and reliability plus they’ll be much easier on the pocket to run.

How many Genesis cars did Hyundai actually register in the UK? I seem to remember the total in one set of figures I read was 2 and they were for 2 senior managers at Hyundai UK. I am by admission a bit of a petrol head and I cannot honestly remember ever seeing one, don't know what one looks like.

The Kia Stinger would be a better choice if you want something with a V6 but being a bit of a Skoda fan why not a Superb 280. Should be plenty of choice for less money.

I've seen one a couple of years ago and I always thought it was such a different choice and have liked them since.

The annual registrations of Genesis were 2014-4, 2015-21, 2016-21, 2017-4, 2018-0, 2019-1

45 Stinger were registered in 2019, with 4 more in 2020.

Between Autotrader and Ebay there are four separate examples for sale in the UK, here is the cheapest,

202101087754226

But this is certainly not a car you'd buy if you wanted to draw attention to yourself, far too anonymous looking for that. That seems to be the case for Hyundai though, the immediate predecessor to the Genesis, the Grandeur, was if anything even more anonymous!. Its predecessor, the XG30, was maybe a little more distinctive in appearance, but in a slightly cheesy American way (I'd still have one though!).

Hyundai Genesis - Cheap luxo barg - Rerepo

Stunning looking car and amazing value used!

Aftermarket filters, brake parts and even alternators are on Ebay at reasonable prices so I doubt servicing would be a problem.

Will have to have a look. I've got a good indy who I use and can work on just about anything. Plus if look at log converstion to help with fuel cost

Oh I never want to draw attention I'm a to much of an introvert for that.

XG30 and the Grandeur, two cars I have always wanted to try. Had I been in a position to buy one new I just might have done. E class comfort for Mondeo money and better built too. People loved to mock the Sonata and Magentis back then, but (including Daewoo and 50 years after America) they brought air conditioning and automatic gearboxes to the masses. No more feeling like death in summer motorway traffic, windows up no longer a status symbol in itself!
I personally think the Genesis is a brilliant car, what a shame it was not appreciated by our German brand obsessed public. They are offered with an in-house v8 in USA!

Genesis can't do V8 and RHD together - but the G70 replacement apparently can, not that the V8 would sell in sensible numbers here.

It's something I'd want to own for some years so depreciation not an issue but fuel consumption yes. At the moment I'm just window shopping need to sort it a fe things first.

Just had a look at How many left and it looks like there was a max of 48 on the road in Q2 2017 with 1 on SORN.

24 seem to have been registered in 2015 and after that sales slowed down.

Last year I would guess just a couple were registered.

So its rare alright but having read a couple of reports its not very good.

Having started off at £50k all repairs will be priced for a £50k car thus not cheap with I would guess no specialists.

As for looks its nothing special at all, suppose its inoffensive. Looks like a Mondeo with a big grin.

If I were to buy something rare and left field it would need to have a redeeming feature or 2 and rare and expensive when new are not 2 I would looking at.

If I wanted something that looked like a Mondeo I would buy a Mondeo.

Plus if look at log converstion to help with fuel cost

With regards to the log conversion (presume you mean LPG since I have never seen a wood burning car) you would never recoup the cost unless you do a decent mileage plus you will probably wipe loads of value of a car that is not exactly desirable.

Log converstion lol stupid auto correct that would be a novel Idea though. I probably wouldn't buy one I just liked the luxo barge car for 15k idea. But until I've sorted out other things the car I've got right now is working and will do me until I decided on what to do.

So just for my own amusement, I had a trawl through Autotrader looking for cars a bit out of the ordinary, with a decent turn of speed, and comfort (at least in theory). Max budget of £20k, but by not necessarily anywhere near that!,

202101158012128

There is only one Cadillac CTS with the bigger 3.6 litre engine (there is also a 208bhp 2.8 litre version), and while clearly not everyones cup of tea, they are rare and different. But under £3k for something like this packing 255bhp doesn't seem bad to me!.

202010235359071

I also like cars which don't shout. This Honda Legend certainly fits with that description, but it is packing 291bhp from its 3.5 litre V6. Four wheel drive keeps everything in control, and being a Honda, it should be reliable.

202102018576660

202010064677162

I have more than a passing interest in Infiniti, so I've thrown two in!. The first is the smaller Q50 (think 3 Series), this version with the most potent power option, a 3.0 turbo V6 with just over 400bhp. The second is the Q70 (think 5 Series) with a 3.7 (n/a) V6 and 320bhp.

202101077723997

202101077747803

Couple of Lexus's (Lexii?) too, both hybrid. The First is the 5 Series sized GS, the second a 7 Series sized LS, both absolutely fully loaded!.

202012167158223

Something eminently sensible, comfy, reliable and fairly cheap to run. The current shape Toyota Camry starts off slightly above the £20k limit, but possibly a bit of haggling could get it down?.

202102058737546

Finally, something even more different. You mentioned the Peugeot 508, well the DS5 shares its underpinnings with the 508. The DS5 (rather than Citroen DS5) is the facelifted model improving the originals jittery ride and replacing the automated manual with the EAT6 torque converter auto. Would it be reliable?, couldn't possibly say(!), but it should be good on fuel. As much as I like cars which don't shout, I also love the 'concept car for the road' looks of this.

Thanks BBD I'm off to bed now as I have a 4am alarm set but will have a look at them tomorrow on my break. Like I said a bit further up at the moment I'm just looking but once I've sorted everything out I want to get myself something nice to waft along in.

For a cheap luxo barge, why not consider an Audi A8? Lots around, parts not a problem and whatever the age they don't rust.
