Ford Fiesta 1.25 2000 - Oil leak - new sump gasket or silicone? - Roland T

I have now removed my gearbox to investigate the cause of my small but annoying oil leak.

There’s a bit of oil across the inside of the bellhousing, so I’ve ordered a seal kit and will to replace all four gearbox seals.

Removing the flywheel, it looks like most of the oil is coming from the bottom of the crankshaft seal or the block/sump joint. The crankshaft seal is mounted into a larger metal plate and the bottom of this plate is flush with the block/sump joint, so it’s difficult to determine whether the oil is coming from behind this or the sump gasket. There is no leak from around the crankshaft itself. I'm not convinced I need to replace this seal but for £20, whilst I can access it, I probably should.

I’ve had the car since it was 4 years old with 25k on the clock, so it’s most likely that the sump has never been off. It looks like it’s stuck on rather than sealed with a gasket. My local factor did not stock a sump gasket and said his system recommended sealant, though this could just be that they no longer list a gasket due to the age of the car. I’ve since found sump gaskets online.

It looks as though the sump could be removed easily enough once the bellhousing is reattached, so I could leave it and see but it would probably be easier to do it now.

Does anyone know if these sumps were stuck on in the factory? I’d be interested in opinions on whether to stick the sump back on with silicone or avoid it if I can get a gasket.

Thanks.

If you do use silicone, I'd recommend a 'non-beading' type. The last thing you want is balls of silicone rattling around inside your sump.

No gasket on this . It’s a silicone joint . If it’s not been interfered with previously , then it’s unlikely to be leaking now . More likely to be rear main seal leak .

Ford use a sealant but is not ordinary Silicone. I seem to remember Dirko do a suitable product. The last thing you want is surplus silicon in the sump that has turned to Gorilla Snot blocking up your pick up pipe.

On a 20yr old car I would live with it. My TR7 has had an oil leak (ATF from the g/box shaft seal actually) for most of its life. To fail the MoT it needs to form a puddle 75mm in diameter within five minutes.

Thanks for all of your replies.

I’d have left it if I had a gravel drive John but wiping the sump every time I come home is tiresome during the winter months and the current restrictions make it a relatively convenient time to tackle it.

I’ve now removed the crankshaft seal and think there’s a good chance it’s the source of the leak. The bottom flange of the plate was sealed with factory sealant as part of the sump fit, so I will fit the new seal with just a small bead of Dirko grey around the bottom edge, to minimise the risk of sealant in the oil. The sump’s staying put.

In addition - check the oil breather and PCV(Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve aren't sludged up. This can increase crankcase pressure pushing oil past seals and gaskets including crankshaft oil seals and valve oil seals (usually increasing oil consumption). This issue is more common on a low mileage car as if an engine is not regularly fully warmed through condensation can combine with oil creating an oil mayo sludge.

While you're about it I would suggest you check the physical condition of the sump itself, too. I don't know about the sump on the Fiesta but the sump on the Mondeo, which uses an identical but larger engine, is known to rust right through due to external corrosion!

The Fiesta 1.25 uses the Sigma engine which is a Yamaha design. Pretty sure it uses an alloy sump.

The early Mondeo used the Zetec engine which was a Ford design. The early ones had an alloy sump, the later ones had a 2 piece sump the loser part of which was steel and rusted away.

The more recent Mondeo models (not the current ones) used a Mazda designed engine and no idea what the sump was on that.

Basically the Mondeo has never had an identical but larger engine to a Fiesta (unless you include the 1.8 Zetec Fiesta's).
