Volkswagen Golf GTI - VRN of 19 yet 1st MOT due? - Dennis Earl

I'm looking to buy a golf gti secondhand which is on a 19 plate, however looking at the gov.uk website it appears that it's first MOT is due this December implying that the date of first registration was in 2017. Is this possible somehow?

No its not. You can't have a plate newer than the date of first registration. Check the V5C. The VIN will also contain the date of manufacture code letter.

If you do look at the car at the bottom of the seatbelt by the door pillar there should be a label with a date of manufacture stamp.

Manufacture date is irrelevant - MoT requirements are based on date of first registration.

If the number plate is in the form X19XXX, then it's the format for pre-2000 models but could be applied as a cherished number to a 2017 car - so does it have one or two leading letters before the 19.

What happens if the car is imported from the Republic of Ireland - does the registration take the date letter of the first registration in Ireland or the date first registered in the UK? I believe the MOT takes the first registration date in Ireland as the starting point.

The date of manufacture would be useful to tie up the V5C registration date with the date the car was made.
