Renault Grand Scenic 2011 - Brake light - Craig Hanmer

I have a 2011 grand scenic and the passenger brake light is not working. Checked the fuse in the glove box and it's working fine. The bulb is brand new but the light will not come on, any ideas on how to fix this? Maybe no power going to the brake light, where do I start

I would check the connector block on the back of the lamp . Very common for the pin contacts to overheat and cause a poor connection.

Hi, there is no power going to the unit. Checked the wire before the block connection to the light unit. The rest of the lights work on the unit only the brake light doesn't.

A wire break in the loom where it comes from the body to the tailgate?

A wire break in the loom where it comes from the body to the tailgate?

So here's no supply to the nearside unit when the brake pedal is depressed but the offside is OK?

Work back from the n/s unit. As above the flexible connections between the body and the tailgate are a classic place for wear/tension and fatigue to cause wires to be open circuit. My Y2K Xantia estate was a s o d for that. Brake lights, reversing lights and parts of the rear light assembly all self disconnected at one time or another albeit after the car was ten years old.

Do you have a wiring diagram?

If it's a canbus system then is the CPU at fault?

Renault Grand Scenic 2011 - Brake light - elekie&a/c doctor
The lighting system is part of the can network that works on a ‘no load no power ‘circuit. So if the cpu detects no circuit , then it shut down the power to it . It’s important to shut everything down, lock and unlock the car, then recheck the lights , after any repairs .

Just spoken to the garage where it failed its mot and they reckon it's a can bus problem. And it will cost an arm and a leg to sort. Any ideas, before I spend endless amounts on it??

I doubt it’s a can bus problem, because the other brake lights work ok. It is possible to piggy back the circuit from the other working side , but it will need to be powered via a relay , so as not to overload the system . The only issue here is that it may not extinguish the bulb fail warning light ( if fitted)

Thanks. That sound like a better option. No warning lights on so this could be a solution. Thanks for the advice. Is it easy to do this? Not the most electrical minded person but will gibe anything a go

It’s not difficult, but I suspect the garage may not know how to do it correctly . You may need to take it to an electrical specialist.

Great. Thanks. This won't make the other lights blown or fuses trip out wil it? Will try this and see what happens will keep you all updated.

I have a 4 pin relay and wire. Is this all I would need. Hopefully going to look at doing it soon as mot retest expires sharpish. Thanks
