Toyota Avensis 2015 - Engine Failure - Leszek

Hello guys,

Last Friday I was driving dual carriage way and suddenly noise started appearing. It was like the belt got broken or something sort of rhythmic knocking sound. A minute later lights flashing on the dashboard appears indicating low oil level and steering wheel problem and than car just stopped. Engine got seized. It is five years car with 70K on the clock. I just wonder what would be you suggestion. Unfortunately it is my misses car and she just bought it a year ago and still have to pay for it as she took it on finance.

When was it last serviced?

When were the oil and coolant levels last checked.?

When were the oil and coolant levels last checked.?

Key question I think. Amazes me how many people don't do this at all never mind on a frequent/regular basis.

Toyota Avensis 2015 - Engine Failure - Leszek

It was serviced 10 months ago when she bought it so I would say it is kind of standard or am I wrong ?

Toyota Avensis 2015 - Engine Failure - Leszek

She bought it last October 2019 so it was serviced 10 months ago

What engine does it have? and is it petrol or diesel.

When was the car last serviced? and when did it have the oil level checked?

Apart from suggesting that in future you pay more attention to checking and maintaining the car(s) you drive, a visit to the florist might help to ameliorate your opprobrium.

Toyota Avensis 2015 - Engine Failure - Leszek

It was 2 L serviced last year just when she bought it

Toyota Avensis 2015 - Engine Failure - Leszek

It is 2L diesel and it was serviced a year ago when she bought it

How often was the oil level checked between the service and the engine seizing?

Toyota Avensis 2015 - Engine Failure - Leszek

Actually she bought it last October 2019

If its got a full history Toyota might take pity on you, but otherwise i think you will need a second hand engine. 2015 was the first year Toyota fitted BMW diesels instead of their own. Is yours a diesel?

Toyota Avensis 2015 - Engine Failure - Leszek

Yes it is Diesel

Possibly, this car could still be one with a Toyota 1AD-FTV as he says it's out of warranty & iirc it was summer when the facelift (with the change to BMW diesels) came in.

Snapped cam belt? If the engine has seized it's a major rebuild and probably means the car is now scrap.

What a so called bullet proof toyota going bang, seems like it is like any other mark if subject to neglect which may not be the case. The thread sounds like the kiddies game Guess Who, maybe the OP will answer the questions.

If you want advice fron us, you need to answer the questions.

How many miles has the car done since last October, and when did you or your wife last check the oil level?

The car has a 5-year warranty. Is it now under or over 5 years old?

Toyota Avensis 2015 - Engine Failure - Leszek

Hello,

Since my wife bought this car last October she did 6.5 K miles and I don't think she checked the oil level since then. I assume she didn't checked it as it wasn't any lights indicating low level of oil. I know that you should do this perhaps more often but based on her previous car Mitsubishi Lancer she thought that checking it ones a year should be enough as this was relatively new car. Unfortunately the price for this came much bigger then she expected. However we appreciate any kind of suggestion of what would be the best solution in this case and the most efficient way to resolve the problem. Now the car is over 5 years old so there is no more guarantee on it

Don't take that as read, IF the car has a full decent (proveable) service history then Toyota may well help out here, but if its simply been run low on oil...and from your OP it appears continued to drive after ominous noises were heard...then they will discover this upon removing the sump and checking bearings and goodwill will be refused.

Note, if you ask for goodwill and they spend time diagnosing and subsequently find neglect is the cause, you will probably be charged for their wasted workshop time, so if there's little or no oil in the sump i wouldn't risk wasting their time or your money.

If its been run low on oil, and you will know this from what's now showing on the dipstick, i would think of this engine as scrap and consider finding a used lump to fit.

The trouble with oil lights, whether for pressure or level, is that by the time they illuminate you're already close to disaster.

A regular check of the dipstick will disclose if the level is dropping. Top up and, if it's going down fast, investigate the cause.

Neither of our cars lose significantly between services.

My son's Pug 107 does and given it's oil capacity is only 3 litres there's not much spare. He only checks it when I remind him or he's home an I do it for him.

Sooner or later he'll wreck it.

Most well made modern car engines use hardly any oil during the first 50,000 miles assuming regular oil changes. Those who buy new and dispose of their cars at or below this mileage might well be lulled into the erroneous security of believing that their engines 'use no oil'. Beyond this mileage it is wise to check the dipstick at least every 2000 miles as oil usage increases as the engine wears. A litre every 2000 miles would not be unusual for an engine at around 100,000 miles. If anyone drives 6.5 thousand miles in a high mileage car without checking the oil they really have only themselves to blame if the engine fails through lack of it.

If it’s the facelift model then it’s a BMW engine which has a rather nasty reputation for eating timing chains if neglected. Does it have a full Toyota service history? If so it’s very likely the firm will help despite being out of warranty.

If however you’ve bought a car that’s been neglected and has a poor or no service history then you’re stuck. A used engine from a reputable source would be best but you need to ask the garage who will be carrying out the job to supply and fit as they’ll then be legally responsible for it if it fails. If you supply it and ask someone to fit it and you find it doesn’t work then you’re liable for all the costs of removing it and then refitting.

Despite the BMW motor these rarely go wrong at such a mileage unless neglected. The 1800 petrol (I own one) is pretty economical and it’s mechanically bulletproof which makes it the better option used while the older 2.0 Toyota motor in the pre facelift model was again pretty tough. I’ll wager it’s a BMW motor and the car hasn’t been maintained correctly. Many backstreet and fast fit garages use the same oil for every car through their door which isn’t acceptable on complex chain driven modern turbo diesels. The use of the incorrect oil by a so called BMW specialist killed a BMW 3 series I had many years back. Last BMW I ever had I might add, I don’t rate them as used buys.

That all said the 2.2 Toyota diesel used in some of them was well known for problems too. If it’s this unit and you have a full Toyota history you’ll usually find the firm very receptive to requests for goodwill.

The reason I asked about oil level being checked wasn't just because of the engine running low on oil, it might be that as it is a diesel that the oil level could have been rising due to failed DPF regens polluting the sump oil with diesel if the car was only doing short journeys. Was the original message "low oil level" or "low oil pressure" ? - you usually get the latter when things are about to go bang!

The point is diesel is a poor lubricant and if the engine oil is polluted with too much diesel then Houston we have a problem. However with other OP comments this feels like a running out of oil issue. What is the oil level at the moment?

However it clearly sounds like a replacement engine is needed although if it was a failed regen issue the DPF might be cream crackered now as well.
