Hi,

Just wanted some advice...

Recently bought two cars from a seller on gumtree, as
none runners...

Spoke to the bloke and sent him a deposit, called him later and said won’t be
able to pick them up on my recovery ask of unforeseen circumstances.. Guy said okay no worries.

Called him a few days later to rearrnage and he has now scrapped them, I have checked HPI and more than likely sold on to someone else and not willing to give back my deposit.

Deposit was not much and really don’t care, just want to nail him for lieing.

I have the registrations and tempted to report as stolen.

I don’t have v5 etc

Is this possible

Putting a deposit on something is not the same as buying it.

Sounds like he thought you were not collecting and disposed of them. Sold for spares and scrapped is probably much the same to him so no proof he is lying.

What did you learn from HPI?

They were never your cars so reporting them as stolen could have consequences for you.

You messed the seller about though not deliberately, but fair play you didn't expect the deposit to be returned? (after all it was you messing him about not the other way round), your situation then changed but too late to complete the agreed deal because the seller had moved on.

I don't see as you have done anything wrong as such, but neither has the seller, my suggestion would be to move on too.

It would be interesting to hear both sides of the story.

My friend was in a similar position, he needed an old car moving urgently, so he offered it at a knockdown price.

As you can imagine, the phone rang off the hook with loads of "i definitely want it and will be round later".

Not a single person showed up.

I've given stuff away on Gumtree and had the same thing - hours wasted waiting in for no shows.
