Transit Connect 1.8 Diesel 2006 - Transit Connect driveshaft replacement - stuartl

Morning Gents (and Ladies)

I have obtained a good replacement drivers side driveshaft for my Connect which I will be fitting at the weekend. A couple of questions, firstly is it correct that the drivers side shaft does NOT have a snap ring where it pushes into the gearbox and is held in place by the intermediate bearing carrier? I understand the passenger side DOES have a snap ring.

Secondly, I have seen a video of the shafts being removed without draining off the gearbox oil and it gets rather messy. Surely it's easier to drain the gearbox first then refill with new oil afterwards? Thanks in advance!

One further question.... if I drain the gearbox oil, approx how much do I need to buy to refill? No reference to the capacity in the manual.

I would have thought there will be snap rings on both shafts . Why wouldn’t there be . If it’s the right side you are doing , if the off side is jacked up , then the most of the oil will be on the near side , away from the shaft output . Gearbox holds approx 2 litres

I would have thought there would be snap rings both sides too but a transit forum maintains there is only one on the near side shaft and the Haynes manual says 'if working on the left hand driveshaft, ensure that the inner cv joint is fully pushed into the transmission, so that the retaining circlip locks into place in the differential gear' This suggests there is no snap ring on the right driveshaft. Unfortunately the Ford dealership is closed!
