I started a new thread after being convinced this was the best convertible 6 cylinders or above for a tall driver - anyone have any first hand experience of owning one? I've been warned about parts availability and A/C evaporators failing and poor NCAP rating (don't care) so far.

I don’t think there’s much to worry about on these. Big low stress motor and pretty simple all round. Quality isn’t brilliant but I doubt it’ll be much of a worry.

The low NCAP was from memory related to the lack of complex crash avoidance tech for which cars are seriously marked down for lacking rather than any structural issues on impact.

I have a manual GT Convertible. Its my second. The first was a very early 16 plate RHD car. Over 3 years nothing really went wrong, it had 2 new front suspension arms at around 17,000 miles under warranty, and that was it. They drive pretty well if you are not a boy racer, an excellent GT car really. Fuel consumption averaged about 26 mpg over 24,000 miles, but dont expect more than 22 mpg if you drive around town. Tyres and brakes last well too. Ford servicing is cheap, and insurance is sensible

Reading what other owners have said, the 2 big things that can fail are the oil coolers, and the Aircon. But it seems that they fail fairly early on, so buy a car with some miles on it.

The facelift cars will cost very slightly less to tax, do slightly more MPG, and if you can get it with Magnetic suspension (an option only on newer cars) ride better. However Ford made the gearing of the newer model much longer which for me makes the first gen cars a better drive.

Both versions are great over any distance. The electric roof goes up and down quickly too. I am 6 foot 2, and weigh more than i should, and the car is very comfy. Hope that helps

I have a fastback, not the convertible. It’s a 2017 model, just coming up to 3 years old and 30,000 miles. Quality depends on definition but for me it’s great as nothing has broken or gone wrong and no squeaks or rattles. Servicing is cheap and with the right dealer service is good, I seem lucky with Hendys in Southampton but they have a specialist service division.

Thanks for the review what year was the new version thinking there s sweet spot with VED 2017 and sub £40000 MRP. think i might prefer the longer gearing.

You’re right about ved. Mine was sub 40k but I think convertibles with options did come in over 40k. Registered in June and annual ved £160 ish. I should know as I’ve just paid it??
as for the gearing - 6th is very long but don’t worry about it being too short, one of the joys of an NA V8 is how flexible it is.
