Transit Connect 1.8TDI 2006 - Front Wheel Bearing Change - stuartl

I am changing both front wishbones on my van and have a rumbling wheel bearing so will do both sides while I have the thing apart.

Unfortunately, I don't have access to a hydraulic press but do have the drift tools to manually drive the old bearing out.

I was thinking of freezing the bearing for a day or two and gently heating the swivel hub in the oven (don't tell my girlfriend) so that I can get the new bearing in with a tap rather than risk damage by hammering it in. Is this feasible and is there any danger of damaging the magnetic ring in the bearing by freezing it? Thanks in advance for your thoughts gentlemen (and ladies).

The wheel bearings on these are seriously tight in the hubs . You are going to struggle to do this job without a press. You run the risk of damaging the bearing if using drift tools.

Most garages will have a suitable press, a small independent might do the fitting for a few pounds (cash), don't even think of approaching a glass-palace dealer service bay.

Thanks for the replies. I have a specialist who I use for my Mini One. They said they'll press the bearings out and back in for me.
