Mercedes A Class Diesel 2.125cc Engine. - Engine failue - Johnny English

Engine cut out at 70mph on the motorway, following a sudden loss of majority of the engine oil, there had not been any oil leaks, even spots, prior to the final journey.

Car is a 64 Plate, 2.125cc Diesel, full MB MaIn Dealer Service history from new, just done 51k miles, last serviced with MB end of Jan 2020.

Car was towed back to my MB maindealer for investigation/repair, just prior to their enforced closure, workshop comment was that the engine was terminal....

At just 50k miles and a full MB Service history what level of assistance in terms of £contribution can you expect from MB Headquaters??

Or should i pursue getting a Recon Engine / Younger Rep Engine from an independant Workshop, bite the bullet and put it all down to a very bad MB experience.....

Does my spec of Engine have a history of high failure rate / issues??

Any wise words on my dire MB situation are most welcome.

Regards,

Johnny English

I would think that the OP would be well aware of that happening, oil everywhere, all over the underside of the van, big cloud of smoke as it leaked over the exhaust, oil dragged up the flat rear doors etc.- a big mess!

I would do a site search on this site and on Google for MB 2.1 litre engine problems. Can you wait for the engine report, a quick glance doesn't always give the correct diagnosis.

I wouldnt expect any support from MB for an old car but I would still ask both the dealer and MB head office.( not really that old, my own car is older, with more miles)

I would start looking for a 2nd hand replacement engine-, it should be a LOT cheaper than a new one from MB. There are engine builders out there but finding a good one could be difficult.

Good luck.

I found this company, but am NOT recommending them, just found them via google.

HJ's advice on reconditioned engines was always to check the business on fer.co.uk

This lot are pretty good, they did some machining for me 25 years ago.
They are still in business so can’t be bad

Generally good engines these, I’ve seen taxis throughout Europe running this engine with well over 500k up and going strong. I’d want to know how this happened. Was it recently serviced? Has someone made a mistake working on it?
